A Nation Hangs in the Balance — What Can We Learn?

By Shane Idleman Published on November 14, 2022

As I write this, it appears that the Democrats will retain control in the Senate. The election results were shocking and eye-opening. Many suggest that voter fraud took place, but I believe that a lot more is at play.

Even in the midst of unbelievable crime, enormous border and security issues, spending like a drunken sailor on furlough, and the approval of transgender agendas and sexual perversion being slammed down our throats, it’s crystal clear that America has jumped into the cesspool of moral filth and enjoys it.

We truly have been weighed in the balances and found wanting. Here’s why.

America Values Death Over Life

As California passed Prop 1, many people expressed tremendous joy over this decision, but in reality, this joy over death is a jarring spiritual indictment against America. Imagine applauding the slaughtering of the innocent.

Could it be that God is using much of this to humble us? Angry tirades won’t get us anywhere, but bended knees will.

Additionally, the overturning of Roe v. Wade caused the previously-anticipated red wave to turn into a small ripple as the votes came in. In other words, it appears that overturning Roe v. Wade was one factor that slowed the red wave. A mind-blowing 68% of single women voted for infant death in America. This offers a clear picture of the spiritual condition of our land.

Much like the prophets in the Old Testament, now is the time to speak the truth in love and confront evil head-on. Their words were designed to cut like a sword, burn like a fire and break like a hammer. This leads to the next point.

America Has Many Pontificators But Few Preachers

If more Christian pastors would have rallied their members to take a stand and vote their values, we would have witnessed a significant spiritual shift. Millions of Christians don’t even vote. Defeating ungodly legislation doesn’t change hard hearts, but it does demonstrate to our Creator that life matters.

Gone are the days of Puritans like Richard Baxter who preached as a “dying man to dying men.” Today’s pastor says, “I preach to increase my Twitter followers.”

And it’s not just in California. From Atlanta to Dallas and from Charlotte to Houston, silent pastors with massive followings choose popularity over spiritual power and silence over alliance with God.

America Chooses Chaos Over Character

How can we witness moral decay and decadence all around us, and still vote for more? How can we witness inexcusable crime, severe governmental overreach, silencing our speech, overdose deaths led by Fentanyl coming through our borders, and still vote for more? It’s a true case of a victim returning to their captor. Our capitulation is breathtaking.

As just one example, John Fetterman, who defeated Mehmet Oz in Pennsylvania, was clear in his campaign that he would release criminals, not to mention his mental and physical state. Other candidates pushed “soft on crime” agendas and were welcomed into our communities. People’s hatred for pro-life legislation and orange hair is driving them mad — they are choosing chaos over character.

America Loves the Darkness Rather Than the Light

Wicked agendas are infiltrating society to the point that parents are being persecuted and criminalized, and their right to raise and protect their own children is being taken away from them and put in the hands of others.

Additionally, the national media is quick to praise the election of two openly lesbian governors in Massachusetts and Oregon, even suggesting that the new Oregon governor would now be using her platform to “amplify LGBTQ+ visibility” nationwide. But is promoting an ungodly agenda the duty of a governor? The Bible says, “Woe to those who call good evil, and evil good.” (Isaiah 5:20)

America Believes That People Are Innately Good

The prevailing thought on the Left is that people are basically good; they just need the right atmosphere to flourish. But this is blatantly false: “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked.” (Jeremiah 17:9) We are deceptive and evil by nature. We need biblical restraints, not unchecked freedoms.

I’m all for genuine prison reform and rehabilitation, but we are putting the cart before the horse. The punishment must fit the crime, then we can work from there. The only way prison reform and rehab will work is to change people’s hearts. We must allow the Word of God to take center stage in our institutions again.

America Must Tilt the Balance of Power

Let me be clear, I am not talking about political power here, but spiritual power. A red wave won’t save us, but the crimson blood of Christ can.

Brace yourself, because even with a Republican-controlled Congress, all hell may break loose over the next two years, and the Republicans will be blamed for it. I’ve also written against the pride on the Right — they too must humble themselves. We must stop the name-calling, silence the belittling and halt the slandering. Unity is the crucial and critical key to success.

America Must Go Back Into the Closet

Every godless movement is coming out of the closet, so we must go deeper into the prayer closet: “I sought the Lord, and He heard me, and delivered me from all my fears.” (Psalm 34:4) Our only hope is to ask heaven to come to our rescue.

America, what’s it going to take to break you? Could it be that God is using much of this to humble us? Angry tirades won’t get us anywhere, but bended knees will.

We must turn completely to God today. He is the Shepherd of the shattered. The Rebuilder of the broken. The Defender of the damaged. The Counselor for the confused. The Rock for the worried. The Healer of the injured. The Rest for the weary. The Lord of the lost. The Governor for the guilty. The Savior for the sinner.

God doesn’t hang in the balance — He sets everything right!
