California’s Shocking ‘You Must Stay Gay’ Bill

By Michael Brown Published on April 5, 2018

In a brazen assault on our most fundamental freedoms, California legislators are considering a bill that would make it illegal for anyone to receive professional help to resolve unwanted same-sex attractions or gender confusion. This would apply to people of all ages. People of all religious and moral convictions. It is an absolute outrage, and it must be opposed vigorously.

For the last few years, a growing number of states and cities have embraced legislation making it illegal for minors struggling with unwanted same-sex attractions or gender confusion to receive professional help, even with the full support of their parents.

This would apply to a 14-year-old girl who was raped by her uncle at the age of 8 and now repulsed by men and attracted to women. If her parents stood with her and she wanted to meet with a trained counselor to help to get to the root of her attractions, in some states, that would be illegal. No professional counselor or therapist or psychologist would be allowed to help her.

California wants to take this one dangerous step farther, making it illegal for anyone of any age to receive such help.

Yet in these same states, if an 8-year-old girl believed she was really a boy and wanted to receive professional help to affirm her male identity, that would be perfectly legal. A counselor could tell her parents to encourage her to dress and identify as a boy. That counselor could also recommend that, at age 10, she start taking hormone blockers, then prepare to “transition” fully to male at age 16, then has sex-change surgery at 18, with hormones prescribed for life.

That would be perfectly legal. But for that same 8-year-old girl to say, “I want to be at home in the body God gave me. I don’t want hormones and surgery. Can anyone help me?” The answer would be, “No. Such help is illegal.”

California is Proposing an Outrageous Overstep

California wants to take this one dangerous step farther, making it illegal for anyone of any age to receive such help. This defies all logic and can only be seen for what it is: a frontal assault on our freedom to self-determination. A frontal assault on our freedom of religion. And a frontal assault on our freedom of conscience.

And make no mistake about this. As ADF attorney Matt Sharp explained on my Line of Fire broadcast, this legislation would extend into the churches.

For example, let’s say that your church has the policy of offering free pastoral counseling for all tithing members. That would mean a financial transaction is involved in those services. So, you, a member in good standing want to receive some much-needed counseling.

You’re a married father of four, but you struggle deeply with gender identity confusion. You set up an appointment with one of the pastors, only to be told, “It is illegal for us to help you.” I am not exaggerating.

Help us champion truth, freedom, limited government and human dignity. Support The Stream »

Or you’re reading the Bible, which strictly forbids homosexual relationships, and you want help with unwanted same-sex attractions. You even read where the Bible says that some people used to practice homosexuality, but through the gospel, they no longer do (see 1 Corinthians 6:9-11).

You try to set up that counseling appointment with your pastor, only to be told, “It is illegal for us to help you.” That pastor could not even recommend a book on the subject from the church bookstore.

That’s how far this outrageous bill goes, and it’s only one of a series of bills being put forward in California. If the bills pass there, other states will be eager to follow suit.

What of the Good That Comes From Such Counseling?

What makes this even more outrageous is that: 1) there are thousands of ex-gays who can personally testify to their own transformation; 2) there are gay and lesbian psychologists who argue against the myth that homosexuality is innate and immutable; and 3) most children who identify as transgender no longer do so after puberty.

And remember, while California seeks to pass this monstrous legislation, it has no problem backing a psychologist who will help a man embrace his alleged male and female identity simultaneously. Or a counselor who will help someone embrace their alleged animal (or, alien) identity. All of that is fine. But to help someone be at home in his or her own body would be illegal.

Positive counseling outcomes for people dealing with unwanted same-sex attractions are higher than positive outcomes for those dealing with alcoholism.

The whole basis of the legislation is the claim that: 1) medical fraud is being practiced; and 2) harm can be done to patients who undergo such counseling or therapy.

But there are plenty of patients who attest to the life-transforming impact of the counseling they received. And there are plenty of Christians who attest to the life-transforming power of the gospel — including transformation from homosexual and transgender identities.

It’s also a fact that there is no proof that such counseling harms a patient anymore than some patients claim harm after undergoing counseling for substance abuse or overeating or depression.

In fact, during my radio broadcast, Ann Paulk, an ex-lesbian herself, said that positive counseling outcomes for people dealing with unwanted same-sex attractions are higher than positive outcomes for those dealing with alcoholism. Yet no one in their right mind would seek to ban professional counseling or therapy for alcoholics.

Will You Stand Up?

No, this California assault on our most fundamental freedoms is simply the latest manifestation of LGBT activism. As I and others have warned incessantly for many years, those who came out of the closet want to put us in the closet. Do you believe me now?

And while critics of any kind of change therapy mocked us with the (false) claim that we were trying to “pray away the gay,” these same critics now want to pass a law that says, “You must stay gay” (or, “gender confused”).

Will you stand up and make your voice heard today?

Here are four things you can do: 1) Share this article and my radio broadcast with your friends; 2) go here to find out more; 3) alert your friends in California and encourage them to contact their legislators; 4) pray for awakening in the Church and sanity in the society.

You have been forewarned.

Jesus wasn’t lying when he said: If the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!

It is sad to see many in our country blatantly calling evil good and good evil. There is a price to pay for this sinful behavior. It is enough to drive one to hopelessness. To feel as if God has forsaken us. But then I remember the grace that God continues to pour out upon us. Even in the strongest of times of discipline. Thank you for you bold efforts to correct, encourage, and enlighten us. May we walk in faith and wisdom in these perilous days.

No one has ever shown me a gay baby. Until that time, I will regard “born gay” as a whopping lie.

    • m-nj

I’d dare say babies are asexual, showing no attraction based on sex, so what is your basis for determining if a baby is homosexual?

And regardless of if there is some inherent genetic basis for homosexuality, that doesn’t mean it must determine someone’s identity or behavior… just like a genetic predisposition towards violence or alcohol addiction (which has been hinted at) is no valid excuse to be a murderer or a drunkard… its just evidence of the pervasiveness of sin and fallen human nature.

    • Andrew Mason

Actually many babies are gay, though not when they have wind. Perhaps you mean no babies are homosexual?

  • Ken Abbott

“Judge for yourselves whether it is right in God’s sight to obey you rather than God. For we cannot help speaking about what we have seen and heard.”

And take the consequences. Better to be wrong before the bars of all human “justice” and right in standing before the Judge of all men.

It’s frightening indeed, but I think the time is now arriving in America when Christians will have to decide what they’re willing to go to jail for. They would be in good company, since many Christians throughout history have already made similar choices.

    • Kevin Quillen

Ken: We agree on something! LOL This is why I call myself a Christian Anarchist.

      • Ken Abbott

Not to stir the pot, since I’m always happy to find concord with fellow believers, but perhaps this is a good place to explore what is meant by Christian Anarchism. The latter term does not have a healthy historical reputation–Haymarket Riot and all that, you know, plus some of the recent Antifa nonsense.

For cards-on-the-table transparency, I offer the following as laying out what I believe to be a brief solid treatment of the position of Scripture on the matter of civil government (ignore the inset numbers–they refer to the Scripture footnotes in the original):

        I. God, the supreme Lord and King of all the world, has ordained civil magistrates, to be, under Him, over the people, for His own glory, and the public good: and, to this end, has armed them with the power of the sword, for the defence and encouragement of them that are good, and for the punishment of evil doers.[1]

II. It is lawful for Christians to accept and execute the office of a magistrate, when called thereunto:[2] in the managing whereof, as they ought especially to maintain piety, justice, and peace, according to the wholesome laws of each commonwealth;[3] so, for that end, they may lawfully, now under the New Testament, wage war, upon just and necessary occasion.[4]

III. Civil magistrates may not assume to themselves the administration of the Word and sacraments; or the power of the keys of the kingdom of heaven;[5] yet he has authority, and it is his duty, to take order that unity and peace be preserved in the Church, that the truth of God be kept pure and entire, that all blasphemies and heresies be suppressed, all corruptions and abuses in worship and discipline prevented or reformed, and all the ordainances of God duly settled, administrated, and observed.[6] For the better effecting whereof, he has power to call synods, to be present at them and to provide that whatsoever is transacted in them be according to the mind of God.[7]

IV. It is the duty of people to pray for magistrates,[8] to honor their persons,[9] to pay them tribute or other dues,[10] to obey their lawful commands, and to be subject to their authority, for conscience’ sake.[11] Infidelity, or difference in religion, does not make void the magistrates’ just and legal authority, nor free the people from their due obedience to them:[12] from which ecclesiastical persons are not exempted,[13] much less has the Pope any power and jurisdiction over them in their dominions, or over any of their people; and, least of all, to deprive them of their dominions, or lives, if he shall judge them to be heretics, or upon any other pretence whatsoever.[14]

We might also profitably discuss what is known as the three (in Reformed theology–Lutheranism has just two) uses of the law of God.

        • Kevin Quillen

The reason I use the Anarchy term is to make the point that I feel I am not obliged to obey a law just because the “authorities” made it. Jesus and the twelve disobeyed the law when they continued preaching after being told to stop. Our founding fathers broke the law which they determined went against their God given rights. I need no authority to govern me but God. I obey all just laws and am a good citizen. As to the stated principle that God institutes governments, it is my belief that He allows men to govern themselves, He does not set up and operate the governments. Therefore I am justified in being a Christian Anarchist. I suspect that there is little to disagree on in principle. I also feel that if American Christians do not stand up for this ideal then soon they will lose their voice in the public square. One of my passions is talking about jury nullification. It may be our last hope to save the American ideal. I do not know where your above points came from but they do not apply to me. The truth has set me free, from man’s law(when unbiblical), and the Law of the Bible. Jesus made it quite clear to me. I walk in His way. I love my neighbor and am anxious for nothing. I care not one whit about the traditions of men.

          • Ken Abbott

The four paragraphs I quoted above come from the Westminster Confession of Faith’s chapter on the civil magistrate. As a confessional Presbyterian, I affirm the Westminster Standards under the superior authority of Scripture as summarizing the whole counsel of God given to us. The language in the first paragraph affirms that God wills there be civil governments in human society for the benefit of mankind and that he is sovereign over them (whether the governments acknowledge him or not), that he raises them up and overthrows them according to his plans and purposes. But as a God-ordained institution there is a proper role for civil government, and the Confession seeks to explain the biblical principles that guide the relationship between Christians and the civil authorities.

        • Babaloo Jones

          Gotta loooove the Westminster Confession…

  • Rclifton

Let’s see…heterosexuals can be “professionally treated” to become homosexual….but a homosexual can’t be “professionally treated” to become heterosexual…sounds like a prima facia case of sexual discrimination to me

  • Andrew Mason

What counts as a professional under the legislation? Would a trained and experienced non-licenced counsellor count? Would a pastor count? Would a community volunteer? There may be ways around the legislation, but it should never have been written.

  • Ben

And we’re surprised at this? All of us, Christian or otherwise, have had our heads comfortably buried in the sand for so long that anything we do now, other than all out revolt, will accomplish NOTHING. Yes, keep making yourselves feel important, and like you are “doing something”, but I guarantee you-it is too late. The saddest thing is that the CHILDREN are paying the price. when SCOTUS decided gay marriage is “constitutional”, “Christians” fell over themselves to “affirm” the decision, posting their rainbow flags all over there “Christian” blogs and Facebook pages. LGBT has been marching forward since the 1960’s, folks-that is over FIFTY YEARS! They have launched a political juggernaut that has wiped out any vestiges of personal rights, religious rights, and parental rights, and we are just now seeing what it means. So we gather our “Concerned Parent” groups (calling yourself a “concerned” parent just highlights how low our parenting standards have fallen), make our patient speeches, get tangled up in legal wrangling over policies at this school district or another and feel so purposeful. Well, its TOO late, and no, I’m not being “negative”. I’m 60 years old, college educated, former teacher, social worker and health supervisor. I’ve been watching this unfold since the 1980’s, when gay men living absolutely filthy lives created an AIDs epidemic, introducing this horrible disease into mainstream society-affecting newborn babies, children and unsuspecting women. And our response? We felt sorry for them, we caved in to their media portrayals of wasted, pain-wracked, pitiable individuals who contracted a disease by doing something perverse and unnatural. But we pushed all that aside. We let them chastise us as “homophobes” if we dared to say ANYTHING against the lifestyle that caused this epidemic. So we bowed down to their finger wagging and self-pity, because we wanted to prove how “tolerant” and “accepting” we were. We let them guilt us into embracing their filthy lifestyles, so we could feel morally superior. We loved having approval from gays-wow, what a step up!!! Who needs morals, religion, health or sanity when you get approval from gays! And we basked in the approval and waited for them to show us respect and acceptance in return. And we waited. And we waited. And while we waited we started accepting the bi-sexuals, too, and then the transgenders. We became addicted to their approval so we accepted more and more. But, we never got that respect and acceptance from them, did we? They never stopped asking for more, and more, and more… And we just kept giving it to them, or we buried our heads in the sand-DURING A DEADLY EPIDEMIC-because we took the lazy way out and told ourselves, “That has nothing to do with me and MY family.” Now, LGBT isn’t asking anymore. They are taking. And they’ve got the backing of government, the school system, the law-the very culture. Now, they are taking our children. Do we really even care? Or are we just feeling a little guilty for letting our children so very completely down, and trying to make a polite little noise for our conscience’s sake? Because we CERTAINLY aren’t doing anything that will actually save our children. If we wanted to actually save them, if we really cared about their well-being instead of clinging to the ease and convenience of having our children raised and indoctrinated by the state, we would be STORMING the federal government, going into full revolt, and risking our own convenience for the sake of our children! We would become radicals, we’d pull our children out of schools and let the school buildings rot-WE’D RAISE OUR OWN CHILDREN AND HELP EACH OTHER DO IT. But that would be hard, wouldn’t it? We might lose convenience, we might even have to…sacrifice! No, Americans don’t believe in that-churches don’t believe in that (unless you’re sacrificing to give your money to them). So keep giving your little speeches and wrangling over policies, having your cozy meetings. Patting each other on the back for being “involved” and “concerned”, haha! “Concern” is for when your toilet leaks, you’re running late, or you lost your house keys. People are perverting your children’s minds for life, grooming them for use by perverts, and sexually assaulting then in schools, locker rooms and bathrooms. And you’re “concerned”?
