An Open Letter to Miley Cyrus

From a former hard-partying, drug-injecting rock-n-roller to the young music superstar.

Miley Cyrus is seen in New York City. December 2, 2015.

Miley, I’m writing this letter to you on the slight chance you’ll read it.

If you don’t, many others will, and some of them will begin to pray for you daily. Some of your followers might also read it, and perhaps something in this letter will speak to them.

But I write to you for one reason only: I care about your soul. Despite your riches and your fame, your life is a shell of what God intends it to be.

Please forgive me, though, if I’m not super familiar with your work. My daughters are in their late 30’s, so I missed your Hannah Montana days. And you can understand that your more recent career does not really intersect with my tastes.

Are You Where You Thought You’d Be?

Still, you have a way of being in the news, whether it’s the latest interview in which you said you were “gender-neutral” or a previous interview where you declared yourself “pansexual.”

Either way, a few things have become clear to me.

You seem to have a real heart for the underdog, for the outcast, for the marginalized. Perhaps that’s part of your Christian upbringing? Could it be that you care for these people because Jesus cares for them too?

It’s also clear that, as you’ve come of age, you’ve run far from your upbringing. Are you sure you’re on the right path? When you fall asleep at night, is there a deep sense of peace and security?

Just think back 10 years, when you were 14 years old. Were you reading the Bible daily and praying? If so, did you find life in the words you were reading? Did you connect with God when you prayed?

If purity once mattered to you, was it worth throwing away? And just how far will you go in pursuit of fleshly extremes?

Looking back, if you ever felt you genuinely knew the Lord — I mean, knew Him as a beloved child of the Father — have drugs and sex and fame replaced the relationship you once had?

And ask yourself this: If the Miley of 14 could have seen the Miley of 24, would she have been proud or ashamed?

Again, I don’t know you at all today, and I certainly didn’t know you back then. But if purity once mattered to you, was it worth throwing away? And just how far will you go in pursuit of fleshly extremes? What’s next on your list of ways to shock and titillate your followers?

You can multiply purity over and over again, and you end up with purity. It’s the same with love. Multiply it endlessly, and you have endless love.

It’s the opposite with fleshly vices. Multiply immorality and you have every kind of perversion. Multiply drug use and you have death.

God’s ways are ways of life, and the path you’re on is the path to death.

Trust Me, I’ve Been There

You might say, “I had your religion, and I don’t want it anymore. Been there, done that for good.”

Perhaps what you had was human tradition? Perhaps what you had was a bunch of religious rules?

That’s why I asked if you ever had a relationship with the Lord. He changes us from the inside out. Unfortunately, many people get inoculated by dead religion, confusing that with really knowing Him. Did that happen to you?

Even though I’m a public figure, I’m a small fry in comparison and can’t imagine the spotlight you’re under. I also can’t relate to the need to be in the spotlight all the time. Is that why you say and do some of things you do?

When you say you’re gender-neutral, is it to make a headline or to identify with people you love? Or are you deeply confused about your gender identity? Honestly and truly? If so, where did that confusion come from, your own heart or your surroundings?

And when you announce that you’re pansexual, is that for a headline too, or do you genuinely welcome all kinds of sex, as long as its consensual? If you really believe that virtually anything goes, do you think you’ll feel good about this later in life? Do you think you’d want your kids to follow your example? Do you ever wish that you had saved yourself for marriage? Do you feel good that other, impressionable young girls will be following your example?

As a teenager, I was a long-haired, hippie rock drummer, called “Drug Bear” and “Iron Man” because I was such a heavy drug user. Rock music and drugs were my life, and our band’s most popular song was called “Dance of the Mushroom Man.”

I went to every rock concert I could. I saw Hendrix twice. I saw the Doors, Janis Joplin, the Who, the Grateful Dead, Led Zeppelin, Jethro Tull, Jefferson Airplane, and more, some of them multiple times. I couldn’t imagine life without drugs and rock music.

But when I encountered the love of God in a little gospel-preaching church in 1971, I was radically transformed. I became deeply aware of my sins. I became deeply aware of what Jesus did for me, dying on the cross to pay for what I had done. And I experienced the joy of the Lord, something so out of this world and euphoric that I told the Lord I’d never put a needle in my arm again. And that was the end of the story — really, the beginning of a whole new life.

Did you ever experience that love when you were a girl? Did you ever experience the joy of the Lord? Did you ever experience the Holy Spirit convicting you of sin?

Perhaps the Spirit is at work in your heart again today. Perhaps God is calling you back, saying “Miley, do you remember?”

He’s ready to receive you if you will turn to Him with all your heart and all your soul. He’ll make you pure again.

Many former child stars show signs of having been sexually abused as children. It is very sad.

      my my aren’t we judgmental

    Miley, Jesus loves you x

  • Mike Beard

Dear Lord, please speak the truth into Miley’s heart. Tell her again she is a child of God and that you love her. Your son Jesus defeated Satan the liar and deceiver at the cross. Miley listen to the Lord calling you back to himself. He wants you to stop hurting yourself. Think of Adam and Eve. They walked in the garden sharing, caring and loving one another and God said it is good! This is how he made us man and woman. This holy relationship is blessed by the Lord. Don’t you want our maker and creator of the universe looking down and smiling. Please turn your life around.

    • Royce E. Van Blaricome

“Tell her again she is a child of God”

Better read your Bible. I suggest you start with Eph. 2:1-3. Maybe then you’ll know what a “child of God” is.

      • Mike Beard

Thanks Royce for the reference to Ephesians 2:1-3. Miley is for sure driven by the spirit of this world and not the Holy Spirit of God. She needs to repent of her sinful ways and ask Jesus in her heart. My thoughts were more to the fact that all people have a choice to be the child of God he created us to be. We must acknowledge him as Lord of our life and ask for forgivenes then believe by grace we are forgiven. Then we can be our truly best, children of the living and only true God. May God give you peace.

        • Royce E. Van Blaricome

You’re welcome, Mike. So now you know that only those who have been Born Again are children of God and all others are children of Satan.

Now I’d like to give you two other passages to look at with regard to Miley, or anyone else, asking Jesus into their heart. That is another all too often repeated Biblical falsehood that so many who suffer from Cultural Christianity have succumbed to. Look at Jer. 17:9 and you will see the heart of Miley. Then ask yourself why would Jesus take up residence in that? Answer: He wouldn’t! Miley needs a new heart. Miley needs a heart transplant. THAT is what happens when one is Born Again. See Eze. 36:26.

Are you part of a local church where you are submitted to godly men as commanded to be who can properly disciple you? If you can make the time, I’d really encourage you to go to the sermon archive at gfccchurch dot org and listen to the sermon series on “Accepted By The King”. It’s back around Apr/May of 2013. One of, if not the, best sermon series I’ve ever heard on what it means to be Born Again.

Also, while I agree with you that all people have a choice to be the child of God, I hope you understand that NONE actually seek to make that choice (Rom. 3:10-12), it’s not a choice that can be made whenever one decides to get around to it, and that it ONLY comes when God draws one to the choice (John 6:44-45) through the conviction of the Holy Spirit (John 16:7-8)

I could go on but I’ll end with this. Even Satan and his demons acknowledge that Jesus is Lord. The Christian has surrendered to Christ as Lord. (Matt. 16:24)

          • Ruth

            Very well stated.

  • Aurelien M

Seems to be a trend for apologetics:
    – start with a “no true Scotsman” fallacy
    – sprinkle bit of Pascal’s Wager
    – end with an appeal to respect anecdotal evidence as proof
As for your Miley Cyrus identifying as gender neutral, or pansexual, as the singer identifying with the underdog being part of a Christian upbringing, are you suggesting that Christians have a monopoly on empathy? Are you doubting the intended reader of your letter’s knowledge of themselves?
I believe, sir, that you are showing your ignorance when it comes to humanity. Anthropologically speaking there have been many gender classifications throughout history, and prehistory
Or are you appealing to people’s understanding of “traditional” marriage? I would suggest reading up on the very definition of traditional marriage as you are presenting. In the Western traditional sense, women were a commodity, and that is what state regulated marriage reinforced, the transfer of ownership of a woman to a spouse. We still see it today in the father of the bride symbolically giving her away to her spouse. But I digress, marriage was a business transaction with little to do with romantic love. So, throughout history, “traditional” marriage has been redefined to adapt to society’s views on morality, not a religious one. Even in your holy book, Adam and Eve’s union was nothing more than a prearranged one, as, what choices could they possibly have had?
Read a few science books (real ones), and maybe an ethnography or two…

    • Aaron Brown

What do you mean by “gender classifications” specifically?

      • Aurelien M

I mean people outside of the binary of genders people in certain circles recognize. For example, Brazilians have people who are born males, however undergo different surgeries in order to appear more feminine and are not considered male or female. Two spirit people who are a different gender altogether. The Sulawesi of Indonesia have multiple genders, in India there is another gender named hijras. To name a few. As humans, we like giving different things a label, and we are slowly learning that those labels do not necessarily encompass all of the variables, and that a lot of different classifications are more of a spectrum, instead of definite categories, gender is one of them, as is sexuality.

        • Disarmed in CA

Cult-sponsored or religion-sponsored mental illness is still mass hysteria, no matter how many people you get to agree with you. Indeed, the more you can get the more ‘legitimate’ the madness becomes.

          • Aurelien M

Explain your point, I’m all for a conversation.

        • Aaron Brown

So let me understand you correctly, there are more genders than just male and female? I have a feeling that you might be using a different definition of gender. What is your definition of gender?

          • Aurelien M

Genders are patterns of culturally constructed and learned behaviors attributed to males, females, or blended categories.

    • Royce E. Van Blaricome

      Matt. 7:6, Matt. 10;14-15, Rev. 21;8.

      • Aurelien M

According to the Edda, everyone worships Odin, some may worship him under a different name. What’s your point?

        • Royce E. Van Blaricome

Exactly what they say. Especially Matt. 7:6 now. Thanks for proving my point.

          • Aurelien M

How was your point, especially regarding “pearls before swine” proven, I have yet to see evidence of your holy book being the correct one. If you are going to look for words of wisdom, why not seek the dalai lama, or the philosophers of the enlightenment? Why choose assorted books written by unknown desert dwellers, and, especially regarding the new testament, written about Jesus decades after his alleged death and resurrection? In the case of the Pauline epistles half are known forgeries, why trust them, it is my understanding that your deity frowns upon lies.

          • Royce E. Van Blaricome

Question: “How was your point, especially regarding “pearls before swine” proven”?

Answer: “I have yet to see evidence of your holy book being the correct one…”

          • Aurelien M

You might want to look up logic, as you are obviously lacking it. Royce. Your arguments are poorly constructed. Congratulations on being the embodiment of an empty faith.

          • Royce E. Van Blaricome

LOL. Thanks for the actual LOL and the blessing. Those comments will be taken in consideration of the source. LOL Seriously, you talking about empty faith is hilarious!

            Oink, Oink, little piggy.

“Whoever does not receive you, nor heed your words, as you go out of that house or that city, shake the dust off your feet. Truly I say to you, it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah in the day of judgment than for that city.” (Matt. 10:14-15)

          • Royce E. Van Blaricome

LOL. Thanks for the actual LOL and the blessing. Those comments will be taken in consideration of the source. LOL Seriously, you talking about empty faith is hilarious!

“Whoever does not receive you, nor heed your words, as you go out of that house or that city, shake the dust off your feet. Truly I say to you, it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah in the day of judgment than for that city.” (Matt. 10:14-15)

          • Aurelien M

So, is it fair to assume that you have evidence for your claims? If so provide them and they will be reviewed.

          • Royce E. Van Blaricome

Yup. See your previous and continued comments and then Matt. 7:6

“A little while, and the wicked will be no more; though you look for them, they will not be found.” – Psalm 37:10

          • Aurelien M

Ah yes, the ever elusive circular reasoning. The bible is true because the bible says it is true! By this same logic, all other beliefs are true, the Edda telling the tales of the Norse gods, the Koran, the Baghavad Gita… Well done, you have proven how baseless your beliefs are.

          • Royce E. Van Blaricome

Well done, you’ve proven how absolutely true my beliefs and God’s Word are. Matt. 7:6.

18 For the wrath of God IS REVEALED from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, 19 because that which IS KNOWN about God IS EVIDENT within them; for God MADE IT EVIDENT to them. 20 For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been CLEARLY SEEN, being understood through what has been made, so that they are WITHOUT EXCUSE 21 For even though they KNEW God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened. 22 Professing to be wise, they became fools (Rom. 1:18-22)

And you are dead in your trespasses and sins, in which you walk according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, of the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience. Among them you live in the lusts of your flesh, indulging the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and are by nature children of wrath (Eph. 2:1-3)

          • Aurelien M

So… More of the Bible is true because the Bible says it’s true… The Edda is true because the Edda says it’s true, And why not state this: Spiderman exists because Peter Parker narrates the story AND it takes place in the existing city of New York?
Also, Frodo saved Middle Earth, and Harry Potter really did defeat Voldemort. You have shown exactly zero evidence, and demonstrated how flawed your logic really is. You are using texts written by unknown authors, chosen to be canonized by a council 17 centuries ago. Your evidence is found lacking, and I am done discussing this matter until you show evidence of the relevance of the Bible in the modern scientific context, as well as the veracity of its content regarding the existence of a deity. After you have done that, you have to demonstrate that this deity is to be used as an example of morality (good luck explaining slavery, giving infinite punishment for finite crimes, and the twisted sense of justice the biblical deity possesses). Have a good day.

          • Royce E. Van Blaricome

“The fool has said in his heart, “There is no God.”
            They are corrupt, they have committed abominable [fn]deeds;
There is no one who does good.” (Psa. 14:1)

“For a dream comes with much business, and a fool’s voice with many words.” (Ecc. 5:3)

“A fool multiplies words, though no man knows what is to be,
and who can tell him what will be after him? (Ecc. 10:14)

“The wise of heart will receive commandments,
but a babbling fool will come to ruin.” (Prov. 10:8)

“Even fools are thought wise if they keep silent, and discerning if they hold their tongues” (Proverbs 17:28)

“Like a dog that returns to its vomit is a fool who repeats his folly” (Prov. 26:11)

          • Aaron Brown

“In the case of the Pauline epistles half are known forgeries”
            What makes you think that?

          • Aurelien M

The fact that biblical scholars, and historians agree that six of the Pauline Epistles were not authored by Paul, yet still attributed to him : Ephesians, Colossians, Second Thessalonians, First and Second Timothy, and Titus.

  • Southern Xposure

Miley’s a goner. The prodigal son realized he would be better in his father’s home, even as a servant, than the life he was living. Lifestyle addiction is nearly impossible to break. Just as Jesus told the rich man that it is easier for a came to pass through the eye of a needle – I’m afraid she is unable to do it.

    • Sue Long

It’s never too late for anyone until they’re dead. She’s still alive, there’s still hope. God is a God of the impossible.

      • Royce E. Van Blaricome

I appreciate your heart but that is a lie and you really must STOP giving people a false hope and a false assurance. I suggest you find a good Bible-believing, Bible-teaching church where you can submit to godly men as your leaders, (as commanded to do so) and be properly discipled. They may be able to even point you to a good Titus 2:3-5 woman as well.

That said, here are some specific things to remember. First, NOBODY comes to the Lord on their own! See John 6:44-45. And NONE of us know when or how often that occurs. Second, when one is turned over to a reprobate mind they are given over and are doomed. See Romans 1. Third, if one has been saved and indwelt with the Holy Spirit and then rejects the Heavenly Gift and forfeits their Salvation by intentionally and willfully walking away from God’s grace they are doomed. See Hebrews 6:4-6. And fourth, there is coming a time when ALL who have heard the Gospel and rejected it will be sent strong delusion by God so that they can NOT be saved. See 2nd Thes. 2:10-12.

The unfortunate and sad possibility is that Miley may be one of those described in Heb. 6:4-6 and 2Thes 2:3.

        Amen

This is a rather pathetic attempt to piggyback yourself on the publicity associated with a troubled person.

which makes the judgement (judge not lest ye be judged) in this

    >>Despite your riches and your fame, your life is a shell of what God intends it to be.<<

so hypocritical. At least Scripturally you are called to do EXACTLY THE OPPOSITE of what you have just done here

    • Royce E. Van Blaricome

Twist not Scripture lest you be like Satan. There really is NO excuse for such Biblical ignorance and constant regurgitated lie (judge not) in today’s age of the internet. A simple Google search in a nanosecond results in an almost endless supply of teachings on the truth of Scripture and the lie in the “judge not”.

So thanks for publicly displaying your Biblical ignorance and completely discrediting yourself. In light of that, we can all take what you say and just consider the source.

  • Royce E. Van Blaricome

“He’ll make you pure again”? Huh? How’s that theologically work out? Miley better hope she was NEVER saved. In which case she was a long ways from being “pure”. If she was never saved there is hope for her. If she was and has turned away, she’s doomed and there is NO hope for her. (Heb. 6:4-6)

    • Denise

I do not say this often. But, shut up Royce. Your attitude is about the least compassionate I have ever heard. Thank God He never gave up on you. You do not know God’s heart. He always goes after the one. Try loving like a compassionate Fathet would. Our heavenly Father knows her and you do not. You didn’t die for her. Jesus did.

  • Ruth

Mark 8:36-37  “For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?
Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?”

She chose to love the world (fame, worldly treasures/riches, and pleasures).

We Believers and followers of Jesus Christ are warned not to love the world nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world. The world is passing away, and also its lusts; but the one who does the will of God lives forever.

    The Peril of Falling Away:
For in the case of those who have once been enlightened and have tasted of the heavenly gift and have been made partakers of the Holy Spirit, and have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to come, and then have fallen away, it is impossible to renew them again to repentance, since they again crucify to themselves the Son of God and put Him to open shame.

For ground that drinks the rain which often falls on it and brings forth vegetation useful to those for whose sake it is also tilled, receives a blessing from God; but if it yields thorns and thistles, it is worthless and close to being cursed, and it ends up being burned.

It’s not surprising why there are many who once claim as Christians and active in the church fall away, 1 Timothy 4:1-2 “But the Spirit explicitly says that in later times some will fall away from the faith, paying attention to deceitful spirits and doctrines of demons.

Here’s the consequences of unbelief and rebellions against God:
    Romans 1:21-26
For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened.

Professing to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God for an image in the form of corruptible man and of birds and four-footed animals and crawling creatures.

Therefore God gave them over in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, so that their bodies would be dishonored among them.

For they exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.

For this reason God gave them over to degrading passions; for their women exchanged the natural function for that which is unnatural, and in the same way also the men abandoned the natural function of the woman and burned in their desire toward one another, men with men committing indecent acts and receiving in their own persons the due penalty of their error.

    Hebrews 10:26-31
“For if we go on sinning willfully after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins,

But a terrifying expectation of judgment and THE FURY OF A FIRE WHICH WILL CONSUME THE ADVERSARIES.

Anyone who has set aside the Law of Moses dies without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses.

How much severer punishment do you think he will deserve who has trampled under foot the Son of God, and has regarded as unclean the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified, and has insulted the Spirit of grace?

For we know Him who said, “VENGEANCE IS MINE, I WILL REPAY.” And again, “THE LORD WILL JUDGE HIS PEOPLE.”

It is a terrifying thing to fall into the hands of the living God.”

  • Ruth

Mark 8:36-37  “For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?
Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?”

She chose to love the world (fame, worldly treasures/riches, and pleasures.

Well Dr. Brown’s appeal is appreciated but I’m afraid she won’t make it.

Hebrews 6:4-6 speaks about the danger of falling away:
For in the case of those who have once been enlightened and have tasted of the heavenly gift and have been made partakers of the Holy Spirit, and have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to come, and then have fallen away, it is impossible to renew them again to repentance, since they again crucify to themselves the Son of God and put Him to open shame. (Hebrews 6:4-6)
