Most of the UK is Oblivious to the Fact That 20 Percent of Pregnancies End in Abortion
One in five unborn babies are aborted in the U.K., but most British residents have no idea that this is the case, according to a study released Wednesday.
Amárach research shows that only six percent of the U.K. population knows that 20 percent of pregnancies end in the country in abortion, according to the Irish Examiner. The researchers also found that only 10 percent of the public was aware that 90 percent of babies diagnosed with Down syndrome are aborted in England.
Commissioned by the nation’s Pro Life Campaign, Amárach gathered data by conducting an online poll of 1,000 adults aged 16 and older in May 2017. The study showed that the public is not only unaware of the correct statistics, but also believes that far fewer abortions occur than is the case.
“With almost the entire focus of the debate on repeal of the 8th Amendment, the public are being totally deprived of the opportunity to consider what precisely legalised abortion would involve and the devastating impact it has had in other countries,” said Dr. Ruth Cullen of the Pro Life Campaign. The Eighth Amendment to the Irish Constitution “acknowledges the right to life of the unborn and, with due regard to the equal right to life of the mother, guarantees in its laws to respect, and as far as practicable, by its laws to defend and vindicate that right.”
“There’s one thing the public doesn’t like and that’s being taken for fools. That is precisely what is happening at present. When people are given a more balanced presentation of the issues, I am confident that support for keeping the 8th Amendment will grow considerably,” Cullen said.
Iceland has an 100 percent abortion rate for babies that receive a Down syndrome prognosis. Other nations have followed suit with their health care treatment of unborn Down syndrome babies. As of 2015, France had a 77 percent and Denmark a 98 percent termination rate for Down syndrome babies.
The release of the new research comes on the heels of the Ohio House of Representatives passing a bill passing a bill banning abortions if a mother receives a diagnosis that her unborn child will be born with Down syndrome one week earlier.
