The latest Quinnipiac Iowa poll shows Republican presidential candidates Donald Trump and Sen. Ted Cruz (TX) in a dead heat, with Trump at 31% and Cruz at 29%.

While Cruz leads Trump among white evangelicals 39% to 27%, Trump leads Cruz among “moderate” and “liberal” voters by an impressive 37% to 6%.

In the last two Republican Iowa caucuses, the evangelical vote clinched the deal for the winner. In 2012, Sen. Rick Santorum was polling at just 16.3% prior to the Iowa caucus but won the day with 24.6% of the vote. He edged out eventual nominee Gov. Mitt Romney by 0.1% in the total vote count.
