Remember That Time Trump Defended Outsourcing?
Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, who has promised to “bring our jobs back,” defended outsourcing as a businessman in 2005 and argued it actually “creates jobs” in the long run.
“I have to take the unpopular stance that it is not always a terrible thing,” Trump said in the blog post titled “Outsourcing Creates Jobs in the Long Run,” first unearthed by Buzzfeed. “Losing jobs is never a good thing,” he added, “but we have to look at the bigger picture.”
Trump cited a study in the blog that found outsourcing creates more jobs because it allows companies to be more competitive and productive, “which means they funnel more into the economy.”
Trump is now campaigning on a platform centered around protecting Americans from outsourcing, promising to bring back their jobs as president by getting companies such as Apple to bring their factories back into the country.
“I’m going to bring jobs back from China,” he said in a recent Republican debate. “I’m going to bring jobs back from Mexico and from Japan, where they’re all — every country throughout the world — now Vietnam, that’s the new one.”
“They are taking our jobs,” he continued. “They are taking our wealth. They are taking our base. And you and I have had this discussion. We’re going to make our economy strong again.”
Trump won the endorsement of two IT workers Disney laid off last year after forcing them to train their foreign replacements. “I feel he [Trump] is for Americans first and foremost,” Dena Moore, one of the workers, said in a statement announcing her endorsement, in which she also condemned Republican Sen. Marco Rubio because she believes “he changes positions to get votes.”
Trump’s campaign did not respond to a request for comment.
