NYC Mayor Spends $265,000 on Transgender Bathroom Campaign

By Published on June 9, 2016

New York City is spending a quarter million taxpayer dollars on a campaign encouraging transgender people to use whichever bathroom is “consistent” with who they are.

Mayor Bill de Blasio and the New York City Commission on Human Rights initiated the campaign on Tuesday, called #BeYouNYC, to signal the city “stands with” transgender people.

“While other cities and states are legislating intolerance and taking away individuals’ right to use bathrooms consistent with their gender identity, we are proudly standing with our transgender and gender non-confirming New Yorkers,” de Blasio said in a statement, according to Fox News.

The #BeYouNYC campaign features videos and ads with four transgenders from New York. The ads tell the viewer to “look past pink and blue” and to “use the bathroom consistent with who you are.” The ads are displayed on buses, subways, phone booths and in print; most ads are in either Spanish or English, but some will be in Korean, Chinese, Russian and Bengali.

Council member Corey Johnson said the “campaign reaffirms our commitment to equality as New Yorkers. When civil rights are under attack around the country, we in New York emphasize the importance of inclusion and diversity. That’s exactly what this campaign is all about. By bringing exposure to this important citywide policy, we are building a culture of acceptance and proclaiming our values as New Yorkers.”

Not everyone believes that taxpayer’s money was spent wisely.

Joseph Borelli, a member of the New York City Council said, “I’m not sure if this is the best use of taxpayer money. However, I guess it is fair to warn people that there may be men in the women’s restroom in the future.”

The ad follows a recently released PSA featuring Cyndi Lauper and Harvey Fiertein singing that we should “Just Pee (Where You Wanna Pee).”
