In the wake of an ambush of Dallas police officers that killed five and wounded seven July 7, military experts agree the Dallas attackers used military maneuvers to kill as many police officers as possible.

One shooter apparently used a maneuver known as a “combat glide,” and used tactical flow techniques while firing on the move against Dallas police, former Navy Senior Chief Malcolm Nance said on Twitter. Nance characterized the shooter as “extremely proficient,” noting the shooter never lowered his barrel, engaged police at point blank range, and exhibited “no panic even under fire.”

Sean Parnell, co-founder of the American Warrior Initiative and Afghan veteran, noted he heard three separate automatic rifles firing in coordination. Parnell characterized the ambush as “sophisticated,” and speculated the shooters may have had “egress routes pre planned.” The sophisticated nature of the ambush against police indicated “some level of reconnaissance,” and may have required spotters for each shooter or even scouts.

“I guess what jumps the most is his assault on the officer. In combat, it’s called a close ambush. If you’re engaged from within 25 yards, you establish fire superiority and assault through the objective. Something — training or no training — this guy clearly did,” Thomas Gibbons Neff, a combat veteran and staff writer for The Washington Post, noted on Twitter.

Speaking to reporters the morning of July 8, Dallas Police Chief David Brown acknowledged the sophistication of the operation, saying, “planned to injure and kill as many law-enforcement officers as they could.” Brown believes “that these suspects were positioning themselves in a way to triangulate on these officers.”

Brown stated that several suspects were taken into custody, with one killed in a standoff with police early July 8. The suspects are reportedly being uncooperative and not discussing their motivation. Brown said during hostage negotiations the deceased suspect told police he “wanted to kill white police officers” and that he was angry with the recent police shootings of black men.
