For Those Concerned About Abuse Scandals, Pope Francis Prescribes Prayer … and Silence

By Published on September 3, 2018

Pope Francis said Monday that the remedy for those clamoring about the church’s abuse scandals and recent cover-up allegations is prayer and more silence.

Francis made the comments during his Monday homily at mass in the Vatican, following not only the fallout over Pennsylvania’s grand jury report on sexual abuse in six dioceses, but also rising furor over Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano’s allegations that Francis and others covered up reports of Cardinal Theodore McCarrick’s alleged sexual abuses. Francis told reporters in August he would “not say a word” about the allegations and seemed to recommend a similar approach of silence for those attending his homily, according to The Associated Press.

DCNF-300“With people who do not have good will, with people who seek only scandal, who seek only division, who seek only destruction, even within families,” the solution is “silence. And prayer,” Francis said, according to Crux Now.

Francis compared the church’s situation to a scene from the Gospel of Luke in which Jews in the synagogue were “filled with fury” over Jesus’ teachings and drove him out of the city.

The gospel writer says they “rose up, drove [Jesus] out of the town, and led him to the brow of the hill … to hurl him down headlong. But he passed through the midst of them and went away.”

Francis claimed those who drove Jesus out of the city were “a pack of wild dogs,” not people, as they forsook reason and gave into anger. He also equated it with Jesus’ response of silence to those who demanded his crucifixion. Christian faithful should therefore, according to Francis, remain silent in the face of those who won’t see the truth.

The gospel writers never claimed, however, that Jesus had to contend with credible allegations of abuse and systematic cover-up, unlike current Catholic leadership.

  • John A.

    Matthew 23:13-33

    • The Church is founded by God and is controlled by God.

Silence is actually the quickest way to Holiness, as you avoid blaspheming like you do. If you had any idea what you did to your soul just now by your sneering, you would never say anything word.

    • JohnYouAreSoCorrect

      Wow, that fits Rome perfectly.
It has been a cesspool filth dozens of times ever since the origins of Catholicism (when paganism merged with Christianity 300 years after Christ’s ascension).
Do a search of “worst popes,” and you’ll find dozens of incredibly evil men.

      • The Church was founded at Pentecost. How do you explain the presence of the Church for the first 300 years?

Even the worst Pope has a greater chance of salvation than you, as there is no way to get into Heaven except through the Church. Moreso, that sin that cries to Heaven of blasphemy you keep incurring must be punished even if you repent of it genuinely.

  • Cody

The Pope does not understand the scriptures himself,if he did he would repent and not sit on a pedestal thinking himself to be the vicar of God.

    • The Pope is the successor of St Peter.

      • JohnYouAreSoCorrect

According to the Bible, all Christ-followers are saints, but you may call me St. John if you insist. 🙂

        • A Saint is someone in Heaven. I cannot account for whatever BS prot “bibles” say.

Actually, assuming your place in Heaven precludes you from it and assuming forgiveness for your sins precludes you from being forgiven for that sin. This is covered under the sin that cries to Heaven for vengeance of blasphemy.

Not even your invincible ignorance will save you from that.

      • Cody

The Pope is more closely related to the antichrist than St Peter.Peter was a man of God, the Pope on the other hand is just a man.

        • No, the Pope is the successor to St Peter just like Bishops are the successors of the Apostles.

The anti-Church is the man-centered eschaton that gnosticism represents. Since your heresy surrounds a belief in ego worship, you are therefore a part of that anti-Church. The blasphemy you spit out just proves it conclusively.

Rome says Peter was the first pope.

Matthew 8:14-15 tells us that Jesus healed Peter’s mother-in-law.
      Peter was married.

In Luke 22:24, on the night before Jesus was betrayed, the disciples argued who was greatest among them. If Peter was to become pope, everyone would have known by then that Peter was greatest.

In Galatians 2:9, 11, 14, we see Paul publicly, severely rebuking Peter for hypocrisy and bigotry. Is that any way to treat a pope?

In Acts 10:25-26, we see a man bow down to Peter, and Peter tells him to get up, because he too is just a man. But all popes delight in men bowing before them.

In a few places in Acts, James seems to be the leader of the early church, not Peter.

There is no evidence that Peter ever served as the Bishop of Rome.
The church in Rome was founded years before Peter ever went there.

      • St Peter was married, but left his wife to a retainer as did all Priests who were married until it was banned.

St Peter was chosen by God, not popular vote.

No it is not a way to treat a Pope, look how you treat the Pope.

calumny is the mortal sin of telling lies to defame others. People bow before the Office of the Pope, not the Pope himself.

St James was the last living Apostle, St James was never the Pope. you can look up the name of every Pope Going back to St Peter.

A freebie: the Pope is the umpire of the Church, Christ (actual Christ, not your ego) is the leader of the Church.

  • Flat Baroque

    So that’s how it works.

    We pray.
    They prey.

    • Priests are the least likely to do anything relating to what sodomites do. teachers/police are most likely.

Where is your condemnation of sodomites?

Where is your condemnation of teachers and policemen?

      • JohnYouAreSoCorrect

OK, I condemn the massive networks of “sodomites” within Catholic clergy worldwide.
And I hope they repent and follow Jesus.

“Come out of her, my people,
so that you will not share in her sins,
        so that you will not receive any of her plagues;
for her sins are piled up to heaven,
and God has remembered her crimes.”

All of Revelation 18 seems to be about Rome.

        • No, there is nothing intrinsic to the Church that supports sodomy. In fact, sodomy excommunicates you Latae Sententiae.

Also what “massive network?” Priests are least likely to do this sort of thing and teachers/policemen are most likely. Every sodomite does this as grooming young men is how they recruit. What does that have to do with the Church?

God Created the Church and is at the Head of the Church. you explicitly reject God so that you may pretend your ego is God.

you currently serve the devil by excusing what sodomites do by scapegoating the Church who totally rejects sodomy.

          • Jim

The only ones doing the abuse are priests. Has zero to do with anything other than pedophilia.

          • No, Priests are least likely out of any groups to do sodomite things. Do you know who does sodomite things? sodomites.

      • Jim

Show us anything to prove that statement. You can’t because it’s all lies. How old are you….12?

        • There are reports.

Do you know what sodomites do and why they must do that to recruit because they do not occur naturally?

          • Jim

Gays don’t recruit. Not necessary. People just us produce them all the time.
            So you’ve got nothing? Typical

          • sodomites do not occur naturally. they therefore must recruit by grooming and abusing the young.

          • Jim

Nope. Born that way every day. Show us your proof?

          • No, as there is nothing intrinsic to humanity that makes one confuse a digestive tract for a sex organ.

          • Jim

Wrong. That type of sex is enjoyed by straight folks too.

          • sodomy is men laying with men. Nothing natural about misusing your digestive tract.

    • JohnYouAreSoCorrect

      Francis saying nothing speaks volumes.
He is not comforting the hundreds of millions in his ‘flock’ with any assurances of his innocence.
Either he is grossly apathetic towards them, or he is guilty of the cover-up, or both.

      • Jim

He’s probably a part of the abusers

  • faithful

Its so interesting the media is silent…Personally, I believe he’s quiet because he’s guilty and this is the only path available to him, for the TRUTH will set you FREE. The light on the hill is shining into the Vatican and darkness is trying to hide behind silence. Hold back those donations and push the clergy to stand for truth and light or no money for the coffers.
