Britain Has No Clue Where 10,000 of Its Refugees Are
The British Home Office has lost track of 10,000 asylum seekers’ whereabouts and will not bother tracking them down due to “a drain in resources.”
An internal inspection of the agency released Thursday found that a significant number of refugees disappear after entering the country, with no accurate paper trails tying them to a location while their applications get processed.
The problem dates back to before the current refugee crisis. Customs records from last year indicated that 30,000 rejected asylum seekers never left the country. They instead stay illegally and off the radar of authorities.
The volume of people makes them hard to track, and resources are instead relocated to catching foreign criminals. Just nine individuals were successfully located in a sample of 338 pending asylum applications examined by inspectors.
It has gotten to a point where the Home Office hopes the hostile environment from Britons will make the illegal immigrants decide to leave on their own.
“We have already commenced a review of approach and related guidance in this area, in addition to the hostile environment making it far less attractive for absconders to remain in the UK illegally,” the Home Office said of the report.
British authorities are also struggling to control the borders. Refugees are forcing their way onto trucks going through the tunnel between Britain and France. Clashes between police and migrants are currently taking place in the city of Calais, France, where migrants have reportedly stormed roads “armed with iron bars and hammers.”
