Would Ben Carson or Carly Fiorina Try to Pilot Air Force One?

By Published on September 21, 2015

You don’t have to be a feminist to appreciate how Carly Fiorina kicked ass at the Reagan Library debate Wednesday night. Just the normal American’s affinity for the underdog is enough. This diminutive firebrand started at zero percent in the polls with minimal name identification, no geographical base, and nary a single public policy issue associated with her name. She’s a cancer survivor who lacks government experience, and her lone foray into politics resulted in a decisive defeat at the hands of California Sen. Barbara Boxer.

Relegated to the “kids’ table” debate last month in Cleveland, she graduating to the main stage at the Reagan Library by virtue of merit—but only after publicly raising hell with CNN and the Republican National Committee, who grudgingly admitted her as the 11th GOP presidential candidate. After dominating that field, the question arises: Is there a higher level of competition?

Eleven candidates, it must be said, proved too many. It certainly flummoxed the moderator. Jake Tapper began the three-hour debate by asking other candidates to criticize Donald Trump and then soliciting Donald Trump’s response to their critiques of Donald Trump. It brought to mind the scene in “Beaches,” when Bette Midler’s character says, “Okay, enough about me. Let’s talk about you: What do you think of me?”

Along with Fiorina, The Donald and Dr. Ben Carson form the Republican trio who believe that never having held elective office is no barrier to the presidency. If the polls are right, a majority of GOP voters actually consider it a virtue. I’m not one of them.
