Conservative activists led by the Massachusetts Family Institute (MFI) filed a referendum petition to repeal a Massachusetts transgender bathroom law Monday, but the attorney general may kill the effort.

Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey supports the law. She previously told The Atlantic that she does not think there are “men who are going to put on a dress one day simply for the sake of walking into a bathroom to observe women.”

Healey must sign off on the ballot measure for repeal to move forward. If Healey approves the petition, the group has until September to collect the 32,375 votes needed, reports WWLP.

“Over the next 80 days, more than 32,000 signatures will need to be collected to put the transgender bathroom, locker room and shower law on the ballot in November 2018. This will be a long process, not only of getting the repeal question on the ballot, but of continuing to raise awareness about the problems that laws like this are causing all over the country,” The MFI said in an email to their supporters.

The law the group seeks to repeal allows transgender persons to use the bathroom they choose and prevents discrimination on that basis. Republican Gov. Charlie Baker signed the bill into law earlier this July.

Some have said that the law is a civil rights breakthrough, while opponents point out that it could potentially put women and young children in danger.

“We believe it’s a bad law that endangers the safety of women and children,” Andrew Beckwith, president of MFI, told the Boston Globe.
