ABC Cancels Roseanne Reboot After Star’s Tweet
ABC Entertainment announced Tuesday that it has canceled its reboot of Roseanne after a widely criticized tweet by the show’s star.
Roseanne Barr had replied early Tuesday to a tweet about Valerie Jarrett, a former advisor to the Obamas. Barr’s now-deleted tweet read: “muslim brotherhood & planet of the apes had a baby=vj.”
The tweet was immediately dubbed racist.
In the face of the growing outrage, Barr tweeted an apology to Jarrett and asked for forgiveness, calling the tweet “a bad joke about her politics and her looks.” Barr also said she is leaving Twitter.
The Roseanne revival this spring was an unexpected major hit for ABC. It was particularly popular among many conservative viewers because Barr’s character expressed support for President Donald Trump.
ABC’s President Channing Dungey said the comment “is abhorrent, repugnant and inconsistent with our values, and we have decided to cancel the show.” Critics immediately pointed out ABC’s lack of punishment for The View‘s Joy Behar, who compared Christians to the mentally ill. They also note that just days ago ABC-owned ESPN rehired hot-head Keith Olbermann, who routinely compares Trump and his supporters to “Nazis.”
Sara Gilbert, who plays Roseanne’s daughter Darlene on the show, tweeted her disappointment at today’s events.
Roseanne’s recent comments about Valerie Jarrett, and so much more, are abhorrent and do not reflect the beliefs of our cast and crew or anyone associated with our show. I am disappointed in her actions to say the least.

This is incredibly sad and difficult for all of us, as we’ve created a show that we believe in, are proud of, and that audiences love— one that is separate and apart from the opinions and words of one cast member.

Former Presidential candidate Herman Cain thinks Roseanne’s politics are to blame for the firing. “I believe … they were looking for a reason to cancel Roseanne,” said Cain, who is black. “Even though the show was a ratings success, I believe that forces within ABC didn’t like the fact that her conservative defense of certain things as so popular and getting such ratings.”
Added Cain, “Yes it was racist, yes it was distasteful, and she vehemently apologized.”
