7-Year-Old NC Boy Becomes Honorary US Army Soldier

TRENTON, N.C. (WNCT) – Supporters of 7-year-old Alex Lockhart gathered at Jones Senior High School to show support and see Alex get enlisted in the United States Army.

Alex has stage 4 rhabdomyosarcoma cancer, loves Harley Davidson and has dreams of being a soldier in the Army. His dream came true Saturday as he was inducted into the U.S. Army as an honorary soldier.

Alex’s father, Dustin Pike, says parents from Trenton Elementary School decided to put this event on for their family. He says they make several trips back to forth to Chapel Hill for chemotherapy and doctors’ appointments and it’s getting tough to afford.

“I didn’t ever think someone would do that, and they have and it’s just a great feeling,” explained Pike.

Pike says he even had to quit working because he needs to care for his son. He and Alex’s mother plan to move to Chapel Hill to make life easier.

“Our life took a big turn; we can’t do the same things that we use to. It took a big turn but it’s made us all stronger.”
