Trump Has a Long History of Contributing to Democrats

By Rachel Alexander Published on January 19, 2016

Donald Trump frequently says he has a history of contributing to both Republicans and Democrats, but the split is heavily skewed in favor of Democrats. Erik Dixon, a New York attorney, has compiled a list of Trump’s political contributions over the years. There are plenty of checks to Democrats and some are in fairly large amounts, dating back to the early 2000s.

In 2008, Trump gave at least  $61,000 to Democratic organizations, which primarily went to help Barack Obama get elected president. Trump has contributed to Democrats as recently 2010. That year, he gave $50,000 to Obama’s former Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel, for his Chicago mayoral campaign.

Trump didn’t even contribute to liberal Republicans Rudy Giuliani and Michael Bloomberg in the past, but instead to their much more liberal Democratic opponents.

Other Democrats Trump has contributed to include Hillary Clinton, Chuck Schumer, Ted Kennedy, Charlie Rangel, Tom Daschle, Andrew Cuomo, Anthony Weiner, Eliot Spitzer and Rod Blagojevich.

According to Dixon’s research, Trump made far fewer contributions to Republicans and generally only in very recent years. He contributed to Governor George Pataki in 1999-2000, John McCain’s presidential race in 2008, Mitt Romney’s presidential race in 2012, and the Republican National Committee in 2012–2014.

His daughter Ivanka Trump also contributes to Democrats, $10,000 to Andrew Cuomo and $2,000 to Eliot Spitzer.
