Why Do the Mainstream Media Ignore Scandals on the Left?

More than one point of view is needed if reporting will ever be truly fair and balanced.

Why do the mainstream media ignore scandals on the Left? The supposed Russia-Trump link has become a cottage industry for MSNBC, liberal magazines and the New York Times. If the Trump campaign did anything illegal, let’s find out. But what about the liberal scandals?

Liberal Scandals Ignored

For example, President Obama knew of Russian attempts to interfere with our election. He responded like a mouse shaking its fist at a T-Rex. Liberal commentator Richard Cohen called the administration’s response “ineffective” and “secretive.” “Most of Congress, not to mention the American people, were kept in the dark.”

Will CBS News launch a big investigation? Will the Times?

Perspectives and convictions are never left on the doorstep of the office.

Then there’s former Attorney General Loretta Lynch. Last week, the Senate Judiciary Committee took action. It wants to find out “whether she assured the Hillary Clinton campaign that the FBI probe into Clinton’s emails wouldn’t go too far.”

Heard much about it? Didn’t think so.

How about Virginia’s governor Terry McAuliffe? He’s a long-time Democratic insider. In 2015, his PAC “gave nearly $500,000 to the election campaign of the wife of an official at the Federal Bureau of Investigation who later helped oversee the investigation into Mrs. Clinton’s email use.”

Front page news, right? Right?

Will They Take on the Clinton Foundation?

Back to Chuck Grassley. Earlier this month, he “demanded the State Department turn over documents showing whether former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton pressured the Bangladesh government on behalf of a donor to her husband’s foundation.”

Ah, the Clinton Foundation. Last August, the Associated Press reviewed 154 non-official meetings and phone calls Clinton made when she was Secretary of State. “At least 85 of those individuals were private-sector donors who contributed up to $156 million to Clinton Foundation initiatives.”

Hillary Clinton was in charge of American foreign policy. Did she use her post to bully donations out of intimidated countries? I’m sure the fair-minded women on The View will talk about this at length.

Journalists are Left of Center

Why the silence on these and similar stories? Here’s one reason: “As of 2013, only seven percent of [journalists] identified as Republicans,” writes political analyst Nate Silver. “Only 28 percent called themselves Democrats, with the majority saying they were independents.”

The next challenge facing conservatives is to penetrate the newsrooms of old-guard journalism.

He argues that the media have “become less representative of right-of-center views.” Well, yes, and water runs down-hill. He also says this created “an increasing and perhaps self-reinforcing cleavage between conservative news and opinion outlets … and the rest of the media.”

He’s right. Conservatives, fed up with the liberalism of “Big Media,” have found alternative outlets for reporting and commenting. Many, including The Stream, provide a needed counterbalance to the mainstream media’s liberal slant.

We Need a Balance in Mainstream Newsrooms

The next challenge facing conservatives is to penetrate the newsrooms of old-guard journalism. This will not be easy. The gatekeepers of the received liberal wisdom are unlikely to let the perceived adversary into their newsrooms.

But the effort must be made. Our objective must not be hostile takeover but effective restoration. Conservatism argues that to be good, judgments should be made fairly and cautiously. Unlike a growing number of liberal reporters, who wear their bias on their sleeves.

Of course, not every liberal is unfair. However, one’s worldview is the lens through which he sees all around him. That’s why our nation’s “mainstream” newsrooms need conservatives. Perspectives and convictions are never left on the doorstep of the office. The mainstream media need conservative points of view if their reporting is ever to be truly fair and balanced.

It’s an important goal. Budding young conservatives who know what they believe and why, must rise to this challenge in a way we have not seen before.
