Lefties Attack Ted Cruz for Lack of Gun Safety — But Were They Right?

By Rachel Alexander Published on November 5, 2015

The left-leaning media site Talking Points Memo has an article ridiculing Ted Cruz for mishandling a gun during an interview with CNN. The article claims he is violating the first two rules of gun safety: (1) Treat all guns as if they are loaded, and (2) Never point a firearm at something you’re not willing to destroy.

As a former gun magazine editor, I can attest that those two rules only apply generally to guns. Usually, they mean when not in use, guns should always be held pointed down. But certain guns are not meant to be held at leisure pointing down, and one is an over-under shotgun. It is completely proper to hold them over your shoulder facing toward the sky, as Cruz is doing (that’s the only way I’ve ever known and been taught). Additionally, the barrel is broken open and you can see it is empty.

Noticeably, even the commenters, who fully admit they dislike Cruz, admit he is not violating gun safety rules.

These comments are just the tip of the iceberg. Some of the other comments are so irate we can’t reprint them here, including one that demands Talking Points Memo remove the incorrect article. The left can learn a lesson from this. Lecturing the right on a technical subject they have no clue nor interest in is probably not a wise idea. They’re better off sticking to superficial, vague generalities about the Second Amendment.
