Charges Filed Against British Man Who Planned to Assassinate Donald Trump

Who is Michael Steven Sandford, and why did he want to murder the presidential candidate?

A British man who attempted to seize a gun from a police officer at a Donald Trump rally in Las Vegas last month is facing a charge of an act of violence on restricted grounds, according to the Associated Press. If convicted, he faces up to 30 years in prison.

A complaint was filed against Michael Steven Sandford, 20,  in the U.S. District Court for Nevada. Considered “a danger to the community and a risk of non-appearance” by a federal magistrate, he is being held without bail.

The complaint says that Sandford told U.S. Special Agent Swierkowski (AP did not have his first name) that he had driven to the rally from California in order to kill Trump, something he had been planning for a year. Authorities discovered he went to a gun range in Las Vegas the day before the rally to learn how to shoot. He also allegedly told Swierkowski that if he were let out into the streets, he would try to kill Trump again. Had the Las Vegas assassination attempt gone awry, he intended to drive to Phoenix to the next rally and try again. He expected to die during the attempt.

Sandford has Asperger’s syndrome and a history of psychiatric problems. His mother, Lynne Sandford, told the BBC she wants him back in the U.K. with her where he can receive psychiatric help, because she thinks he may try to kill himself in prison. She said he has tried to kill himself before, and that he’s a “gentle soul” who won’t be able to handle prison. He moved to the United States around a year ago, lives out of his car and is in the country illegally, AP reports.

His mother tearfully said during the interview, “I need to know what happened to him in the last year in America. Who put these ideas in his head?” She said he had never expressed an interest in politics.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for today.
