Memorial Day is about honoring the fallen. Thanks to Fox News’ On the Record with Greta Van Susteren and correspondent Griff Jenkins, millions of Americans learned about two of our country’s departed warriors at the dawn of Memorial Day weekend.

As you may have read in this story about Memorial Day’s crucial importance, U.S. Marine 1st Lt. Travis Manion and U.S. Navy LT (SEAL) Brendan Looney were Naval Academy roommates who went on to make the ultimate sacrifice in Iraq and Afghanistan, respectively. In 2010, these friends and American heroes were buried side-by-side at Arlington National Cemetery.

Helping tell their story of sacrifice through Brothers Foreverwhich I wrote with Travis’ father, was the opportunity of a lifetime. Most of all, getting to know Travis and Brendan’s family members, friends and fellow warriors has been an experience that I will never forget.

As Memorial Day weekend begins, I hope we will remember the words of Brendan’s wife, Amy, who overcame enormous grief to work closely with us on this book. Brendan and Travis “were the best of friends,” she said. “And that’s why today they are buried side-by-side in the sacred ground of Arlington Cemetery.

“Their story … our story … is but one of the stories of the incredible American heroes from the last decade.”
