UK Library Bans Children’s Playgroup After Complaints the Children Sang About God

An under-five children’s playgroup has been banned from a UK library after some complained that the children sang songs about God.

Noah’s Ark playgroup in Burgess Hill in West Sussex, England has long hosted a singing session once a month at the local library’s “Rhyme Time” for children under five. But after some people complained that the children sang songs about Bible stories — including “Mr. Noah Built An Ark” put to the tune of “Old MacDonald Had a Farm” — the library told the group they could no longer hold the sessions there.

One parent, Charlie Burrell, told MailOnline “At the playgroup last Thursday they informed the parents that they are no longer allowed to perform at Rhyme Time as a couple of songs mention God.

“I myself was horrified to hear this news as I have enjoyed their Rhyme Time sessions for years with my children and I know so many other parents have too.” He added:

I cannot imagine how anyone could find this offensive. All religions and beliefs are rightly celebrated in schools and even on TV channels such as CBeebies and in fact, isn’t that exactly what a library is for — education? … I believe this is political correctness gone crazy, and if our children cannot enjoy the simple pleasures of music and happiness then whatever will be next?

The Noah’s Ark group has volunteered for eight years at the library.

A West Sussex County Council spokesperson told MailOnline “Rhyme Time sessions are held every week in all West Sussex libraries and are open to everyone including families of faith or no faith. … We have been very grateful to this group for their support but following feedback from families, we have decided to bring these sessions in line with the other Rhyme Times in our libraries which are led by staff.”

The King’s Church Mid-Sussex operated the Noah’s Ark playgroup. A King’s Church spokesperson said, “We are sad that our involvement in Baby Rhyme Time is coming to an end after eight years. It has been a well-loved, free group for people in the local area. However, we respect the decision of West Sussex Library services and we will continue to do all that we can to serve them and our local community.”
