Trump Digs Up Clinton Race Quotes in Tweet

Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump isn’t letting up on his aggressive outreach for non-white voters.

Last night, Trump tweeted a video of Clinton describing criminals as “super predators” who have “no empathy.” The clip, taken from a tough on crime speech in 1994 in support of then-President Bill Clinton’s effort to rein in criminal activity, was interpreted by some liberal activists during the 2016 Democratic primary as an attack on blacks.

The tweet came days after the Republican candidate asked black voters to back him over Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, declaring that “Americans must reject the bigotry of Hillary Clinton who sees communities of color only as votes, not as human beings worthy of a better future.”

Clinton walked back some of what she said 22 years ago in a radio interview this spring. “Well, first of all, you know, I have said that I should not have used that word. You know, I was talking about drug gangs and traffickers and cartels, but it was a poor choice of words,” Clinton said. She faced other protests about the statements throughout the Democratic Party’s primary, as did her husband. Bill Clinton defended his wife, saying his wife was aiming to protect black Americans from criminals.

Clinton, who is beating Trump among all voters in current polling, is especially winning among non-white voters. While this racial voter divide is typical of the two major parties, Trump’s minority outreach is relatively new for a candidate who has made aggressive comments about Muslims and Mexicans, and portrayed himself as a law and order candidate despite protests from Black Lives Matter advocates.

Clinton is expected to push back against Trump’s new strategy in a speech on Thursday that will highlight allegedly racial components of Trump’s candidacy and his backers.
