Trump Announces Heightened War on Opioid Epidemic, Taps Christie as Leader

President Donald Trump just announced he’s cracking down on opioid addiction. Trump said on Wednesday that New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie would lead a new commission.

“When people make mistakes of drug use, and it is a mistake, we can’t throw their life away,” Christie said at the press conference announcing his appointment.

As CNN reported, the number of opioid deaths in the U.S. has grown four times since 1999. Ninety-one Americans die from opioid overdoes every day, the CDC estimates. Opioids are found in painkillers and often liberally prescribed by doctors. Opioid poisoning is also rising among teens, who can obtain the drugs legally through prescriptions.

They’re also considered a gateway drug to heroin. As The Stream reported in February, 80 percent of heroin users were on prescription drugs as of 2011.

Christie has said addiction should be treated as a disease, not a “moral failing.” Then people will see that “asking for help is not a sign of weakness, but it is in fact a sign of strength.” He also encouraged loved ones of addicts to ask for help. He advocated treatment of addiction during his last presidential run.

In February, he signed the bipartisan Senate Bill 3 in. The bill limits prescriptions of opioids to five days. It also requires health insurance cover substance abuse treatments.
