Theme for 2019 National Day of Prayer Unveiled

By Nancy Flory Published on November 3, 2018

Dr. Ronnie Floyd unveiled Tuesday the theme for the 2019 National Day of Prayer: Love One Another. Floyd is the senior pastor of Cross Church in Arkansas and the president of the National Day of Prayer Task Force. In an interview with The Stream, Floyd said that after a time of fasting and prayer, God showed him the theme for the event

Love One Another

Floyd’s fasting and prayer took place over the past 30-45 days. His decision on the theme preceded the Pittsburgh mass shooting and other tragedies over the last month. In light of ongoing racial and political tensions, Floyd explained that loving one another is exactly what America needs. “I think that it’s just absolutely imperative. … I’ve never had people more responsive to anything I’ve ever done, anywhere, in the last 24 hours. Because people get it.”

“It’s a message everybody can understand,” Floyd said. “Even people who don’t know Christ know America’s broken. Even if they don’t believe there is a God, or they don’t know if there’s a God, what they do know is that if there is a God, only He can fix it. Even a person that doesn’t know God understands that.”

Last year’s central National Day of Prayer event was held in Statuary Hall in the U.S. Capitol building. Priscilla Shirer, Rev. H.B. Charles Jr., Sammy Rodriguez and others spoke. The event was more about prayer than speaking, though. “We had 25-35 people praying throughout the night in a public manner,” said Floyd. Then they held small-group prayer. Nationwide, over 50,000 groups gathered to pray for the country.

Praying for Speakers

Floyd doesn’t yet know who will speak and lead prayer for next year’s event. “I only want people who are living the theme to have complete authenticity in that. … I will figure out who God wants to use this year and work through a program.”

Floyd said that no one can improve upon Jesus’ words in John 13:34: “I give you a new commandment: that you should love one another. Just as I have loved you, so you too should love one another.”

The message of loving one another couldn’t come at a better time, particularly in America today. “We just need a little order,” explained Floyd. “And there’s only one person I know that can bring order to it and that’s the Lord of Heaven.”
