The Duty of American Citizens in the Age of Elon Musk: Holding Congress Accountable

By Gayle McQueary Published on December 20, 2024

In an era when the political landscape is increasingly influenced by tech moguls like Elon Musk, it’s crucial for Americans to remember that the power to hold elected officials accountable lies with “We the People.” The recent political maneuvers surrounding the continuing resolution (CR) — a legislative tool to prevent government shutdowns — serve as a stark reminder of this duty.

The Musk Factor

Musk, with his significant influence, has been vocal about his disdain for what he perceives as wasteful government spending, as evidenced by his public statements against the CR this week. Musk’s involvement in politics, particularly his role in the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) under the incoming Trump administration, underscores his commitment to effecting change from the outside in. His influence via social media and direct financial support has undeniably shifted some political dynamics, especially within the Republican Party.

However, his activism should not become a crutch for voter complacency.

Voter Responsibility in the Post-2024 Election Era

The 2024 election season marked a significant shift toward a desire for radical change, with voters rejecting the notion of “necessary evils” in governance. Their expectation is clear: no more “business as usual.” The people who voted for Donald Trump this time signaled a demand for government reform, a reduction in bureaucratic sprawl, and a halt to excessive spending.

This mandate from the voters isn’t just a call to action for elected officials; it’s a call to action for every citizen. We see this with growing community involvement nationwide at both school board and city council meetings, with citizens showing up increasingly often to voice their concerns.

The Continuing Resolution Debacle

The CR, which seems to be on the brink of failure, might have been seen by some Republicans as a lesser of two evils to keep government functions operational. However, this approach contradicts the mandate of the 2024 election. Many are tired of compromises that lead to further government expansion and expenditure. If this weren’t true, how do you explain congressmembers receiving phone calls and posts on social media to vote “No” on this bill? (See: https://x.com/Indycliff45/status/1869484376071012385)

Musk’s public opposition to the CR, labeling it a “criminal bill,” resonated with those who felt betrayed by such legislative maneuvers. His call for accountability — stating that any lawmaker supporting such a bill deserves to be voted out — reflects a broader sentiment among voters who want to see surgery on the cancerous tumors in our government spending habits, rather than band-aids that cover the moles.

The Role of Citizens

While Musk’s influence is beneficial, it’s not a substitute for individual voter engagement. Here’s how Americans can ensure their representatives adhere to the promises made on the campaign trail:

  1. Stay Informed: Understand the legislative processes, the bills at hand, and how they align or deviate from campaign promises. While this might seem daunting, it is well worth at least skimming over what you can. This knowledge empowers voters to make informed decisions and hold representatives accountable.
  2. Engage Directly: Utilize social media, town hall meetings, and direct communication to voice concerns, demand transparency, and express expectations. The digital age has made it easier than ever to engage with representatives directly.

For the topic at hand and the uproar of some Democrat lawmakers attacking Musk for posting vehemently in opposition to this bill, here’s a post they must have missed:

  1. Understand Your Vote Has Consequences: Elections are not just about electing officials but also about holding them accountable. If lawmakers do not make good on their campaign commitments, voters must be prepared to vote them out, as Musk suggested.
  2. Support Grassroots Movements: Movements that push for government efficiency, reduced spending, and bureaucratic reform need public backing. This support can come in the form of petitions, protests, or supporting candidates who echo your sentiments.
  3. Demand Legislative Clarity: Insist on clear, concise legislation free of “pork” additions. The complexity of bills like the CR often hide a lot of legislators pet projects — measures they know would never make it into law were they voted on in a stand-alone bill. This practice goes against the voters’ call for governmental transparency and accountability.

Participate, Don’t Abdicate

The involvement of outsized figures like Elon Musk in politics is a testament to the power of individual influence in shaping policy. However, the foundational responsibility to ensure government serves the public interest lies with the citizenry.

The 2024 mandate is clear: Americans seek a government that is lean, efficient, and true to the promises made by those they elected. Now is not the time to sit back and let one person do all the work: It’s the moment for a collective awakening to the “sleeping behemoth” of government overreach and wasteful spending of our hard-earned dollars. Every American must participate in this democratic process, ensuring that the government reflects the will of the people, not just the will of a few powerful individuals.

Besides, is it really so bad for a tool like to force the government to answer to the people again?
