The Brew: The Hill Floats Idea for Stopping Trump’s Certification; Associated Press Ranks Biological Male Boxer #3 ‘Female Athlete of the Year’
"Have they finished crying yet?"
Happy Friday!
It’s the final weekend of 2024, so let’s Brew up something good.
The Hill: It’s Not Too Late for Congress to Stop Trump from Taking Office
Oh, these sad creatures. An opinion piece in The Hill is urging Congress to refuse to certify Donald Trump as president on January 6. Why? Because of January 6. Yup. The two authors are again dredging up the tired notion that Trump is ineligible because he led an “insurrection” against the United States.
If you’re thinking that the idea of using Section 3 of the Fourteenth Amendment against Trump has been thoroughly negated by the courts, to say nothing of the American voters, you’re right.
But still Obama-ites Evan A. Davis and David M. Schulte try. They argue that three venues have declared Trump guilty of being an insurrectionist: The first was Trump’s second impeachment. Except, of course, Donald Trump was not convicted by the Senate. Not exactly a tiny point.
Second, the Colorado Supreme Court says it. But that one was soundly smacked down by the U.S. Supreme Court, which declared that the state court had no jurisdiction over federal elections. But the fact that SCOTUS didn’t rule on the insurrection question gives Bert & Ernie the opening to say, in effect, “They didn’t rule that Trump wasn’t an insurrectionist.” They also didn’t say Trump wasn’t an olive. That doesn’t mean anyone’s going to drop him in a New Year’s Eve martini.
The Hill also cites Nancy Pelosi’s thoroughly discredited January 6 Committee. Therefore, we should ignore the overwhelming will of the American people because Liz Cheney says so.
After laying out some of the mechanisms by which Congress can deny electors and disqualify a candidate — in other words, the same thing they accused Trump of doing — they get to their real dream: Knock out Trump electors and make Kamala Harris president. Because, you know, “democracy” and stuff.
Truth is, the “Trump is an insurrectionist” ship has not only sailed, it’s reached its port of destination and the crew is enjoying shore leave. While doing the Trump dance.
And America is looking at these liberal elites and Never Trumpers the way Ferris Bueller looked at the audience in the tag of that movie. “You’re still here? It’s over. Go home.”
I believe the following survey taps into the same feeling.
Poll: 2/3 Cutting Back on Political Consumption
Roughly two-thirds of American adults say they have felt the need to cut back on media consumption about politics and government because of overload, according to a new survey from The Associated Press/NORC Center for Public Affairs Research.
Is anyone surprised?
- We’ve just had an intense two-year-election cycle. Who doesn’t need a break? Even about 60% of Republicans and Independents are chilling on their political news consumption.
- The (almost) half the country that lost is in no mood to be reminded that they lost. In fact, 70% of Democrats say they are limiting their news exposure.
Joe Biden Signs Bill Officially Making the American Bald Eagle the “National Bird”
Before winging off for yet another vacation, Joe Biden signed a bill this week officially making the bald eagle our national bird. (Raise your hand if you already thought the bald eagle was our national bird. Raise your hand if you’re from Baltimore and think the only bird worth honoring is an Oriole.)
While it’s taken nearly 250 years to give the bald eagle this honor, the majestic bird has been the official emblem of the United States since 1782.
Good News and Bad News from the Military World
The Bad News: China on Thursday unveiled what is perhaps a 6th generation heavy stealth fighter.
The Good News: Biden’s top military officers can now rattle off 71 gender identities.
A Slap to Women: Associated Press Ranks Male Boxer Imane Khelif the #3 Female Athlete of the Year
It’s one thing for a fashion magazine to name a dude in drag the “female model of the year.” But it’s another when a news organization that many still believe to be a fair and balanced news source spits in the eyes of women.
Imane Khelif, the Olympic gold medal “winning” boxer from Algeria whom genetic testing proves is male, has just come in third place in an Associated Press Female Athlete of the Year vote. (Basketball phenom Caitlin Clark ranked #1, with gymnastics GOAT Simone Biles ranking #2.)
Khelif won gold this summer by beating his way through his physically overmatched female competitors.
That Khelif would get votes over the countless actual women who deserve accolades — including female boxers who also won gold in Paris in their weight classes — did not sit well with activist and Olympian Jennifer Sey. “It’s a black eye for women’s sports and the AP,” she said. “And a reminder that the wokesters won’t go quietly, and they think men qualify as among the very best women.”
