The Brew: Republican Congresswoman Calls for Amnesty … in Spanish

By John Zmirak Published on July 18, 2025

Have you ever wondered what life was like for citizens of conquered and occupied countries — such as France during World War II, or Soviet bloc nations behind the Iron Curtain? In such nations, foreigners set the rules and ordered their native-born puppets to tamp down opposition among the sullen, subjugated citizens who struggled not to succumb to learned helplessness like so many tortured chimps in a lab.

Those who collaborated with the foreign conquerors would put on a patriotic facade. They would claim to speak for the “values” and even the “heritage” of their nation, while in fact they served selfish aliens who wished to keep looting the place and enslaving the natives.

Wonder no more what that was like, because it’s exactly what was happening when Republican Congresswoman Maria Salazar (FL) self-righteously demanded that the U.S. stop deporting foreigners who snuck into our country and grant them special status that lets them work. While Salazar was careful to invoke American icons such as Abraham Lincoln, her demand for de facto mass amnesty was aimed at her voting base — so she delivered it in Spanish.

When Republicans are engaged in anti-American gaslighting like this, you know the hour is late. And you know how strong the pressure is on President Donald Trump to betray the one campaign promise that got him elected: the mass repatriation of lawbreaking foreigners who fill up our public schools, emergency wards — and increasingly, our prisons. Let all your elected officials know what you think of this plan — in plain English, please.

There’s a moral problem, too, with creating a legal underclass of people allowed to stay here but forbidden from citizenship, as John Daniel Davidson points out:

Israeli Attack on Gaza Church Stirs Protest

As much as we sympathize with the complexity of rooting out terrorists embedded within a civilian population, as Hamas has in Gaza, as Christians we must stand up and speak when our Israeli allies destroy a Christian place of worship — which showed no evidence of being a host for Hamas or other guerrillas. ABC News reports:

Three people were killed and 10 injured in an Israeli strike Thursday on the Holy Family Church, the only Catholic church in Gaza, said the parish and the Vatican, which issued a response from Pope Leo XIV.

“His holiness Pope Leo XIV was deeply saddened to learn of the loss of life and injury caused by the military attack on the Holy Family Church in Gaza,” the Vatican press office said in a statement.

Of the 10 wounded, one was in critical condition and two were in serious condition, according to the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem. Father Gabriel Romanelli, the local priest, sustained “light injuries,” it said.

This attack follows the vicious assaults by far-right Israeli settlers on the last Christian village in the West Bank:

American Christians must make it clear to our friends over in Israel that tolerating such violence grievously undermines U.S. support for Israel, offering aid and comfort to the dark forces of genuine antisemitism that are rising both on the Left and on the Right.

Israeli Attack on Syria Punishes al Qaeda-Linked Government for Targeting Helpless Druze

Remember the “moderate rebels” in Syria? Sen. John McCain vouched for them. Most of the 2016 Republican presidential candidates wanted to shoot down Russian planes to aid those rebels’ takeover of Syria. Well now they’re in power, and they’re doing exactly what some of warned they would — brutally oppressing religious minorities, including Christians, but especially the harmless Druze.

Israel has ties to the Druze, and dropped some bombs in Syria to punish the new regime for amping up its repression. I’d call this a righteous strike.

NY Times Asks: Will Pam Bondi Keep Her Job as Attorney General?

The Stream reported earlier this week on some questions surrounding embattled Attorney General Pam Bondi, based on her links to Big Pharma supervillain Pfizer, Inc., and the Church of Scientology. Bondi has been at the epicenter of the Jeffrey Epstein storm, provoking an intemperate and self-destructive online rant by President Trump aimed at his own political base.

Bondi remains in the hot seat after making political hay out of the Epstein scandal for months. She orchestrated a high-profile release of a nothingburger of information already made public some months ago. The New York Times warns that Bondi’s political future is very much in question. If Trump decides to make up with his base and release the Epstein files, will Bondi will be thrown overboard as the scapegoat?

Ms. Bondi has, for now, prevailed in her fight with Dan Bongino, a top FBI official who blamed her for bungling the endgame of the investigation into the financier Jeffrey Epstein. Some Trump advisers share that view, but Mr. Bongino badly overplayed his hand and Ms. Bondi parlayed close relationships in the White House into a Truth Social post by Mr. Trump commanding her critics to shut up.

“LET PAM BONDI DO HER JOB — SHE’S GREAT!” he wrote in all caps.

Yet Ms. Bondi’s long-term victory, and perhaps her survival, is anything but assured. Her decision this month to issue a memo affirming that Mr. Epstein’s jailhouse death in 2019 was a suicide precipitated an intense, unexpected right-wing backlash against Mr. Trump with no precedent, no obvious off-ramp and no mercy shown to an attorney general seen by some Trump die-hards as a symbol of a second term littered with broken promises.
