The Brew: It’s Started: Lawless Democrat Public Officials Going to Jail

By John Zmirak Published on May 12, 2025

After four years of the Biden team treating the boxing match that’s American politics like a street fight — complete with brass knuckles and switchblades — the Trump administration has taken the gloves off and tossed out the Marquess of Queensbury rules. Last week, the world learned that judges can’t flout immigration law and smuggle deportable criminal aliens out of their courtrooms or host them at their homes and help them destroy incriminating evidence.

Now the mayor of Newark, N.J. is finding out what happens when you storm a federal facility in defiance of numerous federal laws. Gateway Pundit reports:

On Friday, Newark Mayor Ras Baraka was arrested by authorities for trespassing and storming an ICE detention facility in New Jersey.

Mayor Ras Baraka joined members of Congress to inspect the Delaney Hall detention facility in New Jersey when all h*ll broke loose.

An altercation broke out at Delaney Hall and Mayor Baraka was cuffed and led away by law enforcement.

According to News12NJ, Baraka was shouting at agents after he gained entry through the gate.

Interim US Attorney for the District of New Jersey Alina Habba said Mayor Baraka was taken into custody after he ignored multiple warnings from DHS agents.

Baraka was released from authorities hours later after his political stunt.

It got worse. Gateway Pundit later revealed that “ICE bodycam footage showed Democrat Rep. LaMonica McIver verbally abusing and physically assaulting federal agents at a detention facility in Newark.” If you can stand her foul language, you can watch this member of Congress in action here.

Remember all the Democrats who for the last four years kept saying, “No one is above the law”? That’s the catchphrase New York Attorney General Letitia James invoked when she was manufacturing felonies and baseless civil suits against Donald Trump, the National Rifle Association, and border control activists. She now faces an FBI investigation into her own apparent real estate fraud.

After four years of the Democrats twisting the law, persecuting peaceful protestors, infiltrating churches, and surveilling PTA moms, the Trump administration is showing equal vigor in pursuing those who treat our immigration laws like “welcome” mats they can use to scrape manure off their shoes. The difference is that this administration is pursuing genuine crimes, not inventing them. The Left is genuinely shocked; this isn’t your father’s Republican Party.

Will Trump Emulate Lincoln?

I was genuinely saddened when the cardinals of my church didn’t choose Stephen Miller to be the next pope. But I wasn’t surprised. You can’t always get what you want. The good news is that Miller’s still free to serve President Trump as a principled, take-no-prisoners spokesman for the rule of law and national sovereignty.

And Miller’s latest remarks have set off a panic attack in much of the media. He told reporters last week that the Trump administration might suspend habeas corpus privileges for illegal immigrants, which allow them to tie up deportation proceedings in months or years of red tape, giving activist judges the chance to cut them loose (or smuggle them out of the court room, as we have seen). CNBC reported:

White House deputy chief of staff for policy Stephen Miller said Friday that the Trump administration is “actively looking at” suspending the writ of habeas corpus — the constitutional right to challenge in court the legality of a person’s detention by the government — for migrants.

Miller’s comment came in response to a White House reporter who asked about President Donald Trump entertaining the idea of suspending the writ to deal with the problem of illegal immigration into the United States.

Asked when that might happen, Miller responded: “The Constitution is clear, and that, of course, is the supreme law of the land, that the privilege of the writ of habeas corpus can be suspended in time of invasion.”

The NeverTrump Lincoln Project reacted with predictable outrage:

That post quickly made the Lincoln Project a social media punchline:

Whether you support the idea of suspending habeas corpus for foreigners here illegally hinges on whether you think we face a genuine national emergency. Does the past presidential administration importing 8-10 million illegal aliens, many from hostile countries or with cartel and gang connections, constitute a foreign “invasion”? That’s the position of this administration, and many thinking Christians agree:

Of course, the use of power can always lead to its abuse. Should this president or any president suspend habeas corpus for citizens or legal residents, we ought to protest loudly … as few did when President Barack Obama authorized a deadly drone strike on an American citizen accused of terror links. Foreign citizens who enter America illegally still have basic human rights, but not the full panoply of constitutional rights; otherwise they’d be able to vote in our elections. Of course, many Democrats want to let them do that, too.

No More DEI at West Point

In another triumph for common sense (logos), Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has ended quotas and other DEI initiatives at our country’s service academies, Military.com reports:

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has ordered all military service academies to no longer consider race, ethnicity or sex for admissions, according to a memo released Friday.

The move appears to not only effectively end affirmative action efforts at the three military service academies, which were spared from a Supreme Court ruling on race-based admissions two years ago, but goes even further by including ethnicity and sex.

Hegseth’s memo goes on to say that admission to the academies will be based “exclusively on merit,” because “selecting anyone but the best erodes lethality, our warfighting readiness, and undercuts the culture of excellence in our armed forces.”

Expect a loud, politically counterproductive outcry from the “Our Diversity Is Our Strength” contingent — the same kind of people who want to hire small, unatheletic women as firemen:

Religious Liberty for Military Chaplains Might Gain Protection

First Liberty Institute has represented several military chaplains whose religious liberty has been violated by superiors interfering when those chaplains expressed their sincere, deeply held beliefs as part of doing their jobs. Now a member of Congress is stepping forward to help such pastors.

Last week, U.S. Representative Keith Self (R-TX) introduced the Military Chaplain Act of 2025 in the House, defining the purpose, role, duties, and professional qualification requirements for military chaplains. The legislation includes statutory protections ensuring that chaplain responsibilities and requirements “must be conducted in a manner consistent with the chaplain’s sincerely held religious beliefs and tenets of their religious endorsing organization.”

First Liberty Associate Counsel Erin Smith said, “Chaplains are leaders in our fighting force, responsible for maintaining spiritual readiness. It is imperative that we provide them with the tools and protections necessary to fulfill their duties … without censorship, undue restrictions, or fear of retribution.”
