Texas Republicans Announce New Bill Protecting Privacy in Public Bathrooms

Texas Republicans took a stand for the privacy and safety of women and children on Thursday, filing Senate Bill 6, which would require bathrooms and locker rooms in public schools and government buildings to be used according to biological sex.

The announcement came from Republican Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, one of the most influential politicians in Texas, who served as the state chair for the Donald Trump campaign.

“We know it’s going to be a tough fight,” Patrick said at a Capitol news conference announcing the bill. “The forces of fear and misinformation will pull out all the stops, both in Texas and nationally. But we know we’re on the right side of the issue. We’re on the right side of history. You can mark today as the day Texas is drawing a line in the sand and saying no.”

Patrick cited the need to protect the privacy of women and children from men who would be allowed to enter women’s spaces under so-called nondiscrimination ordinances currently operating at the local level in some Texan cities.

LGBT groups and their corporate allies warn that Texas will face an economic fallout for SB 6, and that “What just happened in Texas today will fire up the LGBT community nationwide like it hasn’t been in a while,” as activist Kevin Nix told The New York Times.

The Texas Association of Business, a corporate lobby that counts ExxonMobil as an investor, claims there will be an up to $8.5 billion decline in state GDP if the bill is passed.
