A Texas Republican elector announced Saturday his decision to resign, concluding that to vote for Trump “would bring dishonor to God.”

In a lengthy blog post, Art Sisneros explored the original intent of the Electoral College, the difference between a democracy and a republic, and explained his conscientious objection to voting for President-elect Donald Trump. 

He writes:

I do not see how Donald Trump is biblically [sic] qualified to serve in the office of the Presidency. Of the hundreds of angry messages that I have received, not one has made a convincing case from scripture otherwise. If Trump is not qualified and my role, both morally and historically, as an elected official is to vote my conscience, then I can not and will not vote for Donald Trump for President. I believe voting for Trump would bring dishonor to God. 

Sisneros said he ultimately arrived at the decision to resign rather than become a “faithless elector” by voting for another candidate. Sisneros claimed that electors are supposed to represent the best interest of the people, and, “It is my conviction that the greatest danger to my district is not a Hillary or Trump Presidency, but it is the judgement of God.”

He also claims that a vote against Trump would violate the pledge he took upon being elected — a pledge in which he promised to vote for the GOP nominee — the signing of which he now claims was wrong.

It was not the first time Sisneros was publicly critical of Trump; he was quoted in Politico expressing discomfort about casting his vote for the now president-elect as early as August. Sisneros now writes that he believes Trump will win anyway, and that the Republican party will fill his spot with someone who will vote for the president-elect on December 19, the day electors are set to vote.
