Ted Cruz Unloads After Trump Slimes Cruz’s Father, Rafael Cruz

By Al Perrotta Published on May 3, 2016

Sen. Ted Cruz unloaded on GOP front-runner Donald Trump Tuesday morning after Trump pushed a bizarre tabloid story claiming “Ted Cruz Father Linked to JFK Assassination!” The story, in a tabloid run by Trump pal David Pecker, features a photo purporting to show Rafael Cruz with Lee Harvey Oswald as Oswald was passing out pro-Commnist-Cuba leaflets in New Orleans just months before Kennedy’s assassination.

The story is pure fiction, except that it doesn’t advertise itself as fiction. It was good enough for Trump, however. On Fox News Tuesday morning, Trump presented the tabloid story as fact: “His father was with Lee Harvey Oswald prior to Oswald’s being, you know, shot,” Trump said. “Nobody even brings it up, I mean they don’t even talk about that. That was reported and nobody talks about it.”

“I mean, what was he doing — what was he doing with Lee Harvey Oswald shortly before the death?” Trump continued. “Before the shooting? It’s horrible!”

In his video response, Cruz noted that Trump has used Pecker to run tabloid hit pieces on other innocents, and then Cruz ripped  Trump as an “utterly amoral,” “pathological liar” and “narcissist” at a level “I don’t think this country has ever seen.”

Cruz went on to declare that Trump is a “bully” who’s fearful of strong women and has such “deep caverns of insecurity” he’s compelled to build tall buildings with his name on them. Watch Cruz’s response immediately below.

The National Enquirer ‘Scoop’

The tabloid “scoop” announces breathlessly, “The ENQUIRER has the disturbing photographic evidence that was buried in secret U.S. government files, with Rafael Cruz, now 77, palling around with the man who murdered America’s 35th president!” And adds, “Top D.C. insiders have confirmed to The ENQUIRER that ‘the man in the photograph is indeed Rafael!'”

Was Rafael palling around with a Communist assassin? There is zero evidence of this. It would be closer to the truth to say Trump and his friend, Pecker, are using a favorite slime tactic of Communists to discredit a political opponent, and counting on the gullibility of the public to go along. A few points:

  • The National Enquirer has endorsed Donald Trump and has spent the 2016 campaign publishing bogus hit pieces on Trump’s rivals.
  • The notion that anti-Communist Cuban-American who would be handing out pro-Castro fliers with a Marx-loving defector like Oswald is absurd on its face.
  • The “photographic evidence that was buried in secret U.S. government files” collapses under the briefest scrutiny. The picture is familiar to anyone who has spent more than five minutes digging into the JFK assassination. It’s on YouTube. And as noted by the Miami Herald, the Warren Commission investigated, but never identified the man shown with Oswald.

Lee Harvey Oswald in New Orleans

Lee Harvey Oswald passing out pro-Cuban leaflets in New Orleans, August 2013. The National Enquirer and Donald Trump allege the man to Oswald’s immediate left is Ted Cruz’s father Rafael.

  • Most crucial, we’re talking about The National Enquirer.

Before responding to Trump, Cruz answered the specific allegation with the seriousness it deserves. “I guess I should go ahead and admit: Yes, my dad killed JFK, he is secretly Elvis and Jimmy Hoffa is buried in his backyard.”

Rafael Cruz: Anti-Communist Man of God

Rafael Cruz was born in Cuba, and as he well acknowledges supported the Castro revolution against a socialist Cuban government before Castro had declared himself a communist, to the point of enduring torture at the hands of the Cuban government. As Sen. Cruz writes in his book A Time for Truth, “Men with clubs beat him. His captors broke his nose when they kicked him in the head with their army boots. They bashed in his front teeth until they dangled from his mouth.”

Rafael Cruz turned on Castro the moment Castro declared himself a communist in 1961, and has remained in steadfast opposition to communism in the decades since. He immigrated to America and was so passionate about the American Experiment in liberty that he had his son Ted memorize the U.S. Constitution. “He has always felt a visceral urgency about politics,” Ted Cruz says of the man he calls his hero. “Having the right people in office was vitally important to my dad, as if it were a matter of life and death. Because for him, in a very literal sense, it was.”

At a candidate’s forum last fall at Prestonwood Baptist Church outside Dallas, Sen. Cruz spoke movingly about his father’s religious conversion and the new man he became.

In sum, the National Enquirer may call Rafael Cruz a friend of Oswald, but the Book of Life calls Rafael a friend of God.
