Some Targets on ISIS Kill Lists Were Not Notified by FBI

After the Islamic State released kill lists with 15,000 names on them, many Americans were not notified that they had been targeted.

The lists, released from March through May, contained names of individuals in New York, Texas, Florida and California that ISIS published on web sites, according to Circa News. Though this information is not public, Circa News found the lists and called individuals who appeared on them — “from college professors and military personnel to art collectors and homemakers.”

In Texas, Circa News called 24 people at random from the list, 22 of whom were not informed that they were named by ISIS.

“I’m very upset that I was not notified by the FBI or local law enforcement,” one woman told Circa News.

FBI officials said most Americans were alerted in some manner and that no one on the list has been attacked to date.

A senior law enforcement official told Circa News the FBI tasked the Army for notifying service members on the list. Other challenges created complications, such as address changes. Among the names on the lists, 50 were federal employees and there were around 70 military personnel or family members.

“The lists are consistent with ISIS ideology supporting attacks on all non-Muslims living in countries at war with the terror group,” according to The Washington Free Beacon.

The SITE Intelligence Group, which monitors jihadist propaganda, issued a report that stated, “This shift in target selection shows a new method in serving a long-standing function of IS and other jihadi groups: instill widespread fear into governments and the public.”

The reported continued:

Given the power and ease of social media, along with the increasing ubiquity of Internet access and smart phones, every IS supporter can act as their own online media group, recruitment office, or fundraising organization.
