Pro-Life Group Supports School Walkout Protesting Abortion

A pro-life group is supporting a school walkout to protest abortion after last week’s anti-gun school walkout. Students for Life of America will provide flyers, press releases and legal advice to students who want to protest on April 11.

Rocklin High School student Brandon Gillespie organized the walkout, the Sacramento CBS affiliate reports. He said it is to honor the millions killed by abortion. “I just want to spread awareness about the cruel things that are happening in Planned Parenthood clinics across the country,” Gillespie said. “The cruel murder of these children who have done nothing wrong.”

“Every day, Planned Parenthood violently ends the lives of 880 children,” said Students for Life of America President Kristan Hawkins in a statement. “Every day, Planned Parenthood targets this generation in school and online to trap us in their predatory business cycle. And for many of us, every day, we are silent, but Enough is Enough. It’s time that the #prolifegen stands up to the violence of abortion and those who perpetrate it. It’s time we clearly demand that our nation defunds Planned Parenthood and abolishes abortion now.”

The event organizers are using the hashtag #LIFE. In a tweet, one student encouraged others to talk to their school about a walkout. “Working with @bgillie13 to get my school and more schools involved in this #LIFE National School Walkout,” @dorcusmafia wrote. “Talk with administration at your school and use this poster if you want to raise awareness! Walkout is April 11th at 10AM for 17 minutes.”

Gillespie was inspired by his teacher, Julianne Benzel. She’d asked her students to think about whether there was a double standard in protests on school property having to do with abortion and gun control. Her discussion upset two students and she was placed on administrative leave for it.

In a Fox & Friends interview, Benzel explained her comments. “If schools … across the country are going to allow one group of students to get up during class and walk out to protest one issue, would they still give the same courtesy to another group of students who wanted to protest…abortion?”

One of Gillespie’s fellow students wasn’t happy about the abortion protest walkout. “Abortions aren’t really anything that has to do with school or students here,” she said. “They have their First Amendment, they can go protest about that anytime anywhere.”

But Gillespie said that’s the point. “I would like to see if there really is a double standard and what will come of that,” he said.

The school walkout will be for 17 minutes on April 11 at 10 a.m. in all time zones.
