Stream Splashes: September 16-22 in Review

Every week, The Stream rounds up some highlights from the recent news. We call these our “splashes”: everything from insightful commentary on the week’s big events to small inspiring stories you may have missed.

 

I do not know if Brett Kavanaugh is guilty of what he’s accused of doing when he was a teenager. His innocence or guilt is a separate matter.

What I do know is that the anti-Kavanaughs — i.e. the Left, the Democrats — could not care less whether he’s innocent or guilty. They do not care what he may have done as an intoxicated teen. Nor are they racing to defend the honor of Ms. Ford.

This is about abortion.

On August 18th, Madison, Wisconsin Bishop Robert Morlino wrote a powerful letter decrying “all the sins of sexual depravity committed by members of the clergy and episcopacy.” He pledged to offer a public Mass of Reparation, which was held on the 14th. He also said he would be keeping the traditional Ember Days fasts near the end of September (starting Wednesday, the 19th), and invited the Catholic faithful in his diocese to do the same.

If you heard about this, you probably thought: Ember what? Even though I’m working on a book on fasting, I first learned about these fasts only a few months ago.

This week, producers of the upcoming film Unplanned announced principal photography on the long-rumored Abby Johnson biopic has been completed. With a cast including Ashley Bratcher (War Room), Robia Scott (CSI) and Emma Roberts (The Hunger Games: Mockingjay), Unplanned has been slated for release on March 22, 2019.

Midway through shooting in May, filmmakers invited The Stream to Stillwater, Oklahoma, for interviews with the actors and their real-life counterparts.

We are constantly bombarded with bad news. There are disasters, dangers, challenges and woes. On the political scene, we find perpetual discord peppered with lurid denunciations and shrill condemnations. Media reports are alternately dismaying, disappointing, distressing, disgusting, or depressing. But despair not, friends: All is not lost!

Here let me serve you a heaping helping of good news: The world is more prosperous and more peaceful than it has ever been before.
