Stream Splashes: September 15-21 in Review

Every week, The Stream rounds up some highlights from the recent news. We call these our “splashes”: everything from insightful commentary on the week’s big events to small inspiring stories you may have missed.

 

God’s Word makes it clear that we are to pray for those in authority. In the Old Testament, you find many kings. And very few of them didn’t have a prophet in their ear. Yet, for doing just that with President Trump, I’ve actually had people tell me they’ll never support the outreaches of LIFE again — that I’m a false prophet.

But two verses explain why I’ve invested in time and prayer with the president.

Twenty years ago, on September 19, 1999, a prayer meeting began at a small facility in Grandview, Missouri, a suburb of Kansas City. The prayer has not stopped since.

Thursday marked twenty years — more precisely, 175,320 hours, including leap days — of continuous prayer with worship at the evangelical International House of Prayer-Kansas City. “Two decades ago, we said ‘Yes’ to keeping this sanctuary open and gazing on His beauty morning, noon, and night,” said Mike Bickle, founder and director of the nonprofit missions group. “God has shown His zeal for this, and I have no regrets.”

In 2017, the New York City Council passed a law that punishes counselors who engage in LGBT-related speech from a certain viewpoint — the viewpoint of a patient seeking to overcoming unwanted transgender feelings or same-sex attraction. Now, the LGBT movement has asked for the repeal of this law. And, in a recent public statement, the Speaker of the City Council agreed.

Why? Because free speech matters. And elections have consequences.

The NY Times hit-piece on Justice Brett Kavanaugh, bringing up a new allegation of sexual misconduct, continues to fall apart. The Daily Caller News Foundation reports how the article failed to mention that the alleged victim has zero memory of the alleged incident and refused to talk to the reporters. And yet, the media is after Kavanaugh again anyway, and several Democratic candidates again calling for Kavanaugh’s head on a plate. The persecution of this man is downright Orwellian. Orwellian to the point it sparked our imagination.
