Stream Splashes: October 28 – November 3 in Review

Every week, The Stream rounds up some highlights from the recent news. We call these our “splashes”: everything from insightful commentary on the week’s big events to small inspiring stories you may have missed.

 

It was, the court said, attempted first-degree intentional homicide. Maniskumar Patel had slipped a drug into his girlfriend’s drink. She suspected that he had spiked the drink and had it tested. When it came back positive for a dangerous drug, he was charged with murder.

What makes this case unusual? He wasn’t trying to kill his girlfriend. He was trying to kill their unborn child.

The DA charged him with attempted first-degree intentional homicide. But if his girlfriend had taken the drug herself, the state would defend her right to do so. It might even pay for the drug. How does this make sense?

As a long-time critic of uncontrolled immigration, you’d expect me to have a simple take today. President Trump is taking on “birthright citizenship.” And that’s a good thing. Period.

In the end, I think it is, for both political and patriotic reasons. But we need to acknowledge the undertow. The things that bother us about changing this rule. We do ourselves no favors if we try to wish them away. They’re the root of the only good arguments which honest people offer in favor of birthright citizenship. And we want to convince honest people, whose emotions have misled them.

Christian leaders are expressing solidarity with the Jewish community following a gunman’s violent rampage at a Pittsburgh synagogue on Saturday. The gunman in Pittsburgh killed 11 people and injured six others, including four police officers.

With national elections one week away, they are also discerning the lessons for people of faith during this polarized time.
