Stream Splashes: November 4-10 in Review

Every week, The Stream rounds up some highlights from the recent news. We call these our “splashes”: everything from insightful commentary on the week’s big events to small inspiring stories you may have missed.

 

Sharran Sutherland’s tenth pregnancy was going well. Early ultrasound images showed a healthy baby and placenta. At 11 weeks, Sutherland saw her baby’s heartbeat blinking on the screen. But a couple of weeks later, it was gone.

Sutherland’s doctor didn’t want her to miscarry the baby at home. She could hemorrhage. The doctor advised a dilation and curettage, or D&C. But she knew what that meant. “I was not okay with that,” she told The Stream in an interview.

“So, I said, ‘No, I want to deliver my baby.’”

It would have been a minor miracle if the Republicans had kept the House of Representatives in this election. Not just because historical trends show that in virtually every mid-term election, the president’s party suffers. Remember that two years after Barack Obama was elected president — redeeming America from its historic sins, for millions of deluded post-Christian suburbanites — his own party lost 63 seats, more than twice as many as Donald Trump’s GOP lost Tuesday night.

A history-making scientific experiment that allowed two women in Texas to carry the same child before birth. A woman who had a girl, but wanted a boy, so she asked if anyone would swap kids with her.

And the next envelope is pushed, and the line is moved farther back, and the question of what is morally right is shouted down with charges of judgment and intolerance. We are God now. We decide what is right, and we do what pleases us.

One of the most liberal school systems in the country wants parents to know that boys and girls are built differently. Except when that truth is not politically convenient. After all, this is the school board that voted to teach children that biological sex is meaningless.
