You probably don’t remember me. I asked you to write a chapter in my “Multiple Views among Christians on Dating & Courtship” type book. But having already published two best-sellers on these topics, you had understandably moved on. Soon after you became a pastor, after which I ran into you just once. But your twin brothers would later write the foreword for Thriving at College. And your dad would endorse my prequel, companion version for parents. So I’ve always been grateful for your family. And I’ve always thought highly of you.
The young man, a quadriplegic, stunned the world when he walked across the stage at his graduation ceremony with his fiancee’s help. The video went viral. Then he walked seven yards at their wedding. That video went viral, too.
A freak accident during a college football game left Chris Norton paralyzed from the neck down. He had misjudged a hit and ended up on the field face down, unable to move. “God, give me the strength to get through this,” he prayed. A doctor told him he’d never walk again. Chris didn’t believe it.
It ain’t easy being Baltimore. The capital of the entire free world is 25 minutes down the parkway. You’re the older brother who had to sit and watch as his baby sibling became captain of the football team, homecoming queen and CEO of the most profitable and powerful enterprise in human history.
I was sitting in my hometown movie theater. It was Toy Story 4. I was expecting to laugh — even, perhaps, to cry. After all, Woody has taught us some pretty powerful lessons about friendship, loyalty, courage, and sacrifice. But I was not expecting the lesson this movie told about the very meaning of life.
