Sanders: Clinton Foundation Donors Mean Hillary Conflicts of Interest if Elected President

The insurgent candidate hit his opponent for donations to the Clinton Foundation from nations that violate human rights.

Just two days before six states, including delegate-rich California, vote in Democratic primaries, Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders (D-VT) said that donations from foreign nations are a conflict of interest for opponent Hillary Clinton.

“If you ask me about the Clinton Foundation, do I have a problem when a sitting secretary of state and a foundation run by her husband collects many millions of dollars from foreign governments, many governments which are dictatorships … yeah I do,” Sanders told CNN’s Jake Tapper on Sunday.

“You don’t have a lot of respect there for opposition points of view for gay rights or women’s rights,” Sanders continued, naming Saudi Arabia as a nation of concern.

Last year, the Foundation disclosed that it had received millions of dollars from seven nations during Clinton’s four years as U.S. Secretary of State. The nations that donated include Algeria, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman, Australia, Norway and the Dominican Republic, according to The Washington Post.

The Post also reported that Saudi Arabia declined to donate to the Foundation while Clinton was in office, resuming donations after she left office. Among other laws, the nation requires women to wear head coverings in public and permits the killing of people who engage in same-sex sexual relationships.

Donations to the Clinton Foundation have dogged the leading Democratic presidential candidate for months. Thirteen months ago, the International Business Times reported that during Clinton’s time at State, the department “authorized $151 billion of separate Pentagon-brokered deals for 16 of the countries that donated to the Clinton Foundation, resulting in a 143 percent increase in completed sales to those nations over the same time frame during the Bush administration.”
