Rubio’s Lead Grows in Senate Race

Sen. Marco Rubio has a growing lead over his Florida Democratic candidates, a new Quinnipiac University poll has found.

Rubio leads Rep. Patrick Murphy by 50-37 percent, a 6-point shift in Rubio’s favor since last month. Rubio also leads Rep. Alan Grayson by 50-38 percent, a 4-point shift since June. The primary is August 30.

Though Rubio said he would not run for Senate if he lost his bid for the White House, his change of mind does not seem to affect voters’ decision to support him, Politico reported.

Rubio’s success can partially be attributed to his popularity among independents and his strong base of Republican support.

Rubio said Monday that he feels he can rebound from the presidential primary because “it’s a different race.”

“Voters are capable of liking someone and supporting  someone for Senate but deciding they want something different for president,” Rubio said.

Quinnipiac University’s poll found that Republicans were leading in several other swing states.

“The numbers seem to be breaking the Republican way in the battle for control of the U.S. Senate, at least when it comes to the critical swing states of Florida, Ohio and Pennsylvania,” said Peter Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll.

Overall, the survey found an “abrupt shift” in the Republicans’ favor, according to Politico. The presidential poll found Hillary Clinton trailing Donald Trump by two percentage points. President Obama’s approval rating has also fallen among Floridian with 44 percent approving of the job he is doing, down from 54 percent last month.
