Report: Top FBI Lawyer, Comey Adviser, Under Criminal Investigation for Leaking

By Al Perrotta Published on July 27, 2017

President Trump has been calling for “our beleaguered” Attorney General Jeff Sessions to go hard after leakers. Seems he already is.

FBI General Counsel James A. Baker is under criminal investigation by the Department of Justice (DOJ) for allegedly leaking classified national security information to the media, Circa reports. They cite multiple anonymous sources close to the probe.

Circa has not been able to confirm the details of what material was leaked.

Who is James A. Baker?

Baker is described as a “close confidant” of former director James Comey.

According to New York magazine, Comey sought Baker’s counsel after meeting with Trump. Comey claims he felt pressured to shut down the Russian probe. However, he did not report his concerns to the DOJ as required. The men decided against it because “they did not fully trust Attorney General Jeff Sessions β€” and because the events were unprecedented in their experience.” Or at least that’s what “one senior law enforcement official familiar with the matter” told the magazine.

Comey named Baker FBI general counsel in 2014 after a long career in the intelligence community. They had also worked together at Breakwater Associates, a powerful hedge fund. Earlier, Baker worked for the DOJ under both Bill Clinton and George W. Bush.

According to Heavy.com, Baker was “a respected expert” on the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) and the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (FISC). His job included filing and preparing applications for domestic surveillance.

Trump, Sessions and the Leaks From National Security Apparatus

Trump has been plagued by endless leaks from the intel world. James Comey himself admitted that he leaked his “Trump memo” to the New York Times in order to manipulate Congress into naming a special counsel. A special counsel was named, Robert Mueller. Mueller is Comey’s mentor and, according to New York magazine, knows Baker well.

President Trump is openly frustrated with Mueller’s probe. He’s blasted the cozy relationship between Mueller, Comey and other Washington players. He regularly bemoans the leaks and unmasking that drove the Russian narrative in the first place. Lately, he’s taken his anger out on Sessions. Trump remains bothered that Sessions recused himself from the Russian investigation.

In interview with Tucker Carlson airing tonight, Sessions admits the attacks are “kind of hurtful.” But he goes on to defend Trump as a “strong leader … determined to move this country in the direction that he believes it needs to go to make it great again.”

Despite reports that Trump is itching to replace him, Sessions insists he is staying. “(Trump) wants all of us to do our job and that’s what I intend to do.”

The work seems well underway. A federal law enforcement official tells Circa “the bureau is scouring for leakers and there’s been a lot of investigations.”

Sessions himself says he’d soon be offering an update on those investigations.
