Report: Ted Cruz Set to Announce Support for Donald Trump

By Al Perrotta Published on September 23, 2016

Twitter and the political world are sizzling at this hour over reports that Texas Senator Ted Cruz is set to announce his support for arch-rival Donald Trump. According to Politico and CNN, that announcement can come as early as today. Reports Politico:

It is unclear whether Cruz will say only that he is voting for the Republican nominee, as other lawmakers have done, or offer a more full-throated endorsement, but the idea of throwing any support to Trump is controversial within Cruzworld.

“If he announces he endorses, it destroys his political brand,” someone who worked for the Cruz campaign told Politico. Conservative columnist and talk show host Steve Deace was also not happy with the news, calling it the “worst political miscalculation of my lifetime.”

Trump, who repeatedly called Cruz “Lyin’ Ted” during the Republican primaries, had threatened to “spill the beans” on his wife and accused his father of being involved in the Kennedy assassination. Cruz made a bold stand against Trump at the Republican National Convention, urging Republicans to “Vote your conscience,” which was taken by Trump’s supporters as an attack on Trump.

Cruz’s Serious Concerns

However, according to Lifezette, sources close to the ongoing discussion between the Cruz and Trump camps note that “Cruz has become seriously concerned about the long-term threats to the Constitution and conservative priorities should Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton win the White House.” Then there’s his own future to consider. Since his “vote your conscience” declaration, Cruz has seen his favorability ratings collapse, has come under mounting pressure to back Trump, and may even face a primary challenge in 2018.

Cruz may have signaled a softening of his stance on Trump with a tweet Wednesday:

Adding to the drama, Trump declared after the GOP Convention that he would not accept Cruz’s endorsement. And some are wondering — if jokingly — whether Cruz is planning a Trump-esque slap down.

There has been no official word from the Cruz camp on an endorsement. In response to Politico‘s inquiry, Jason Johnson, Cruz’s chief strategist on the campaign “responded with a photo of himself, with a hand over his face.”
