5 Quotes for Palm Sunday

By Amelia Hamilton Published on March 27, 2015

This Sunday, we enter Holy Week with Palm Sunday. It is the Sunday before Easter, when we remember the entry of Jesus into Jerusalem. He entered the city as a triumphal king, with people rushing out to meet him, laying calm fronds in his path.

Zechariah tells of “The coming ruler of God’s People — lo, your king comes to you, triumphant and victorious is he, humble and riding on a donkey.” In Mark 11:8-11 “Many people spread their cloaks on the road, and others spread leafy branches they had cut in the fields. Then those who went ahead and those who followed were shouting,, ‘hosanna!,’ ‘blessed is the one who comes in the name of Lord’ … ‘Hosanna in the highest heaven!.’”

As we celebrate Palm Sunday, here are five quotes on which we can reflect.

“But Palm Sunday tells us that […] it is the cross that is the true tree of life.”
Pope Benedict XVI

“Palm Sunday is like a glimpse of Easter. It’s a little bit joyful after being somber during Lent.”
Laura Gale

Ride on, ride on in majesty!
In lowly pomp ride on to die;
O Christ, thy triumphs now begin
O’er captive death and conquered sin” — Hymn by Henry Hart Milman

Alleluia, how the people cheer And palm leaves rustle as the king draws near. — John Beavis

Hey, King! Where’s your crown, where’s your Cadillac? I’ve never seen a king before — on a donkey’s back. — Paul Grant & Marian Palmer

I hope these quotes speak to your hearts as you reflect. Have a blessed Holy Week!
