President Trump Urges ‘Unity’ in the Wake of Congressional Shootings

President Donald Trump issued a call for unity in the wake of this morning’s attack on GOP congressmen and staffers at a ball field in Alexandria. Trump delivered his remarks in a nationwide address from the Diplomatic Room of the White House.

“We may have our differences, but we do well, in times like these, to remember that everyone who serves in our nation’s capital is here because, above all, they love our country.”

Said the President, “We are strongest when we are unified and when we work together for the common good.”

He praised the heroic response of the officers detailed to protect House Majority Whip Steve Salise (R-La). “Many lives would have been lost if not for the heroic actions of the two Capitol Police officers who took down the gunman despite sustaining gunshot wounds during a very, very brutal assault.”

Scalise was shot in the hip and is said to be in stable condition. The two officers and at least two others were also wounded. Trump announced that the gunman, identified as James T. Hodgkinson, 66, of Belleville, Ill., has died. (Social media accounts show Hodgkinson, a volunteer for the Sanders campaign, held very strong anti-Trump, anti-GOP opinions.)

“Congressman Scalise is a friend, and a very good friend,” Trump said. “He’s a patriot and he’s a fighter. He will recover from this assault. And Steve, I want you to know that you have the prayers not only of the entire city behind you, but of an entire nation and, frankly, the entire world.”

Scalise and the other GOP congressmen and staffers were practicing for the annual charity baseball game against Democrats scheduled for tomorrow night. It’s been announced that the game will go on.
