Planned Parenthood Sues Ohio to Regain Taxpayer Funding

Planned Parenthood sued Ohio’s Department of Health Wednesday in an effort to regain access to tax-payer funding. A law signed in February by Gov. John Kasich, HB 294 prohibits state and some federal funds from being used to perform or promote nontherapeutic abortions or contract with organizations that perform them.

The law is scheduled to go into effect May 23. Planned Parenthood’s two affiliates receive approximately $1.4 million in funding from Ohio’s health department, a small percentage of their combined $28 million budgets.

Planned Parenthood of Greater Ohio and Planned Parenthood of Southwest Ohio claim the new law “violates their constitutional rights by denying them the funds ‘in retaliation for’ providing abortions,” reports The Associated Press. The lawsuit claims that without taxpayer money going into their clinics, thousands of women would be denied basic healthcare, such as HIV tests, cancer screenings and other services. The director of Planned Parenthood of Greater Ohio called the law “an attack on people who already have the least access to care, all in the name of politics.”

Gov. Kasich’s office and Ohio’s health department declined to comment on the lawsuit, citing the pending litigation.

Ohio Right to Life called the lawsuit “frivolous.” The state of Ohio, it said, “has every right and reason to cut off state funding from entities that do not fit our state policy to prefer childbirth over abortion,” and called Planned parenthood “a hyper-political corporation that is constantly mired in scandal.”

According to the Associated Press, 24 states have either enacted or proposed measures that target the organization with defunding since last summer’s release of undercover videos by the Center for Medical Progress detailing Planned Parenthood’s fetal body part business.
