Pelosi: I Don’t Support Abortion-on-Demand, But I Won’t Say What Pro-Life Laws Should Exist

Longtime abortion supporter House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) is drawing fire from erstwhile allies for her statement on Tuesday that “I don’t believe in abortion-on-demand.”

However, her office did not return multiple requests for comment from The Stream asking what pro-life legislation or funding changes the top House Democrat would support. In the meantime, NARAL Pro-Choice America is hammering Pelosi for her words.

“The Leader should stop using twisted GOP talking points about abortion and birth control,” said NARAL senior vice president for campaigns and strategy Sasha Bruce. “We don’t know women who demand abortion or use abortion as birth control. We do know women who make thoughtful decisions about how and if they want to start a family, and who need access to all reproductive-health care services, including abortion. We’re confident the Leader does too, which makes her comments all the more troubling.”

On Wednesday, Pelosi said that she has “never supported” abortion-on-demand. “Inside and outside the Congress we should all be working together to make sure that woman have the right to make their own decisions” about their families, she stated.

According to Politico, Pelosi spokeswoman Evangeline George said, “there has been no stronger champion for Roe v. Wade and women’s health in Congress than Leader Nancy Pelosi. With women’s health and reproductive choice under full assault from a Republican House and Senate, we must all focus on the serious efforts underway to undermine a woman’s right to make her own health decisions.”

Rep. Jan Schakowsky, (D-IL), likewise defended Pelosi, telling Politico that “There is no one who has been a stronger champion of a woman’s right to choose and to make her own health care decisions than Nancy Pelosi.”

In her initial comments, given to Roll Call, Pelosi said efforts by House Republicans to defund Planned Parenthood are an “insult to the intelligence and judgment of women,” and declared herself “with the program in terms of the Catholic Church” and the Church’s teachings on abortion.

However, those teachings state that abortion is always wrong, and an offense against God. Pelosi’s support for birth control likewise contradicts the Church’s teachings on sexual intercourse.

Abortion supporters often claim that expansive use of birth control will reduce abortions; however, an extensive study in Spain found the opposite.
