Rep. Steve Scalise (R-La.) was shot Wednesday morning at a baseball practice with his GOP colleagues in Alexandria, Va. He is reported to be in critical condition. Five people were injured, including Scalise, a Congressional staffer, a lobbyist, and two police officers. The suspect was shot by police and later died.

Rep. Ruben Kihuen (D-Nev.) quickly tweeted that Democratic members practicing at a nearby field were praying for their colleagues.

Law enforcement officers are being hailed as heroes.

Sen. Rand Paul said “it would have been a massacre” without Capitol Police, NBC’s Bradd Jaffy reported.

The Alexandria Police Department also rushed to the scene and reportedly exchanged gunfire.

Paul shared his firsthand account of the incident with MSNBC. He said “there was a rapid succession of shots.”

Sen. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.) described the shooting to reporters at the scene. The young son of Rep. Joe Barton (R-Texas) was at the practice, but is unharmed, according to Flake.

President Donald Trump called Scalise “a true friend and patriot” on Twitter.

First Lady Melania Trump tweeted her thanks to the first responders.

Vice President Mike Pence also tweeted that he and wife Karen were praying for those affected.

A little more than an hour after the shooting, the AP reported that a staffer for Texas Rep. Roger Williams is one of the confirmed victims.

Williams has coached the GOP’s baseball team since 2013.

The staffer, identified as Zack Barth, later posted on Facebook that he had been shot but was “okay.”

The members were preparing for the upcoming Congressional baseball game. The game is scheduled for Thursday. In the annual event, Democrats and Republicans face off to benefit charity. Charities supported include the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Washington, the Nationals Dream Foundation, and the Washington Literacy Center. “Who would want to kill people trying to do something good?” Sen. Paul asked of being targeted at the baseball practice.

The official Twitter account for the annual event announced later Wednesday that the game will still take place.

The last time a member of Congress was shot was in 2011 when Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, a Democrat, was shot in the head in Tuscon. Giffords tweeted Wednesday morning that her “heart is with my former colleagues, their families and staff, and the US Capitol Police.”

Later Wednesday morning the shooter was publicly identified as James Hodgkinson, a white male in his late 60s.

Trump announced in a televised statement that Hodgkinson has died.
