New Jersey Cardinal Welcomes Gay Activists to His Cathedral

By John Zmirak Published on April 19, 2017

One of the more forgettable comedies of 2011 was Cameron Diaz’s farce, Bad Teacher. It wasn’t actually funny. Its efforts at wild irreverence seemed desperate and strained. The sequence that led me to hit Stop and eject the DVD was this one: Diaz was working against her will as a teacher in a high school. Hung over and apathetic, she over and over again blew off giving a lecture. Instead, she popped in a movie of dubious relevance and left the kids to watch it as she napped.Bad_Teacher_Poster

That didn’t make me chuckle. It made me livid. I’ve had some amazing teachers, and a few really bad ones. I know how important the devoted ones can be. They can change your life. And the rotten ones do grave harm. A highly educated person who’s being paid to pass on his learning to you sends a message. If he takes the material seriously, he teaches you it’s important. If he shrugs and waves it off, young impressionable people get that message too: This topic is so bogus, not even the teacher cares about it.

I still remember with bitterness a cynical high school religion teacher. His blasé, sarcastic attitude toward core Christian doctrines made my teenage blood boil. I learned he later went off to peddle suburban homes. I hope he took them more seriously.

Cardinal Joseph Tobin of Newark: Bad Teacher

Which brings us to the Catholic Archbishop of Newark, New Jersey, Joseph Tobin. Recently boosted by Pope Francis to cardinal, Tobin will be one of the tiny group voting on who the next pope will be. He leads a flock of millions, in the New York metro area, with a major Catholic university, Seton Hall right in his city. In fact, Seton Hall is one of the small group of Catholic schools which have seen a resurgence of Catholic identity. That depends in large part on Tobin’s good will. Which is really a shame for Seton Hall. Because like Cameron Diaz’s character in the movie, Tobin is a bad teacher.

The role of a bishop is first and foremost as a teacher. His authority in his diocese is similar to the pope’s over the whole church. He’s considered an heir of the apostles. He is meant to do for (let’s say) Newark what St. James did for Jerusalem: serve as the primary evangelist of the faith of Jesus.

On crucial moral issues, Tobin is snoozing through the class. In this he is like far too many bishops around the world. Worst is that that faction of bishops which Pope Francis seems to favor and promote: social justice activists, who go way beyond the church’s actual teaching on political issues in fashion with the left. But on topics that might bother Caesar, or anger elites, they shrug and go back to sleep. Or worse, with a wink and a nod they give aid and comfort to the enemies of our faith.

Gay Activists at the Cathedral

The man who called Tobin’s abuses to our attention is Joseph Sciambra. Once sunk so deep in the homosexual lifestyle that he acted in pornographic films, Sciambra was granted the grace to escape. Now he bares his soul and braves the scorn of angry activists, defending the Gospel’s teaching on chastity and repentance. If I had to name one person alive today whom I expect someday to be canonized a saint, Sciambra would be that man. On his blog, Sciambra reports that Cardinal Tobin is sponsoring the following event:

An LGBT Pilgrimage and Mass to the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Newark, New Jersey. According to a flyer for the event, the Pilgrimage and Mass are taking place: “With the blessings and best wishes of His Eminence Joseph Cardinal Tobin, C.Ss.R., Archbishop of Newark …”

Mass will be offered by Rev. Francis Gargani, C.Ss.R. Gargani frequently offers retreats to LGBT Catholics, one of which was advertised by the gay-affirmative Open Hearts GLBT Ministry located at St. Patrick – St. Anthony Church in Hartford, Connecticut. The Open Hearts group recently read a book which celebrated the “Queer Christ.” According to a description for the retreat:

Through ritual prayer, reflective input sessions, shared discussion, personal time for prayer and quiet, and social gatherings, this retreat offers a special opportunity for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender persons to celebrate their identity and deepen their experience of community in the living God.

Not a word about chastity or repentance. Sciambra dug deeper and learned about the organizers of the event. They work closely with pro-gay activists who reject Christian moral teaching outright. And Tobin is hosting them at his own cathedral.

Why invite gay activists to a Catholic cathedral? Why silence a pro-life priest?

Silencing Faithful Priests

But don’t let it be said that Tobin is always asleep at the switch. When it comes to enforcing conformity with liberal politics, his diocese swings into action. As LifeSiteNews reported:

The Archdiocese of Newark says it will crack down on an outspoken pro-life priest after a hit piece on a local news site against him.

On Wednesday, NJ.com published a scathing article about posts made by Father Peter West on his Facebook page.

The article says West “has repeatedly railed against Muslims,” voiced “strong support for the president’s travel ban” and “assailed millennials as ‘snowflakes’,” among other accusations.

The article suggested the priest has violated the Johnson Amendment by being so political on Facebook and worried that West’s “withering attacks … run counter to the statements and philosophies of his own leader, Newark Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin, and his ultimate boss, Pope Francis.”

James Goodness, a spokesperson for the Archdiocese of Newark, told NJ.com that the archdiocese is “concerned about Father West’s comments and actions, and will be addressing them according to the protocols of the Church.”

….

West is … vocally supportive of Catholic moral teaching on his social media. He has 8,494 Facebook followers. More than 200 people have signed a recently-launched petition asking the Archdiocese to condemn the “false, inaccurate” hit piece on him.

West said his posts about radical Islam were made “on what you might say are feminist grounds.”

He said he was troubled by “the fact that they don’t treat women as equals, that one man can have up to four [wives], that a woman is treated as an article of property, that in many of these Muslim countries, they practice female genital mutilation.”

“Eat My Sheep”

Why were gay activists invited to Newark’s cathedral? Why was a faithful New Jersey priest silenced for taking sane stances on social media? Is Tobin catering to social justice leftists while kicking moral conservatives to the curb?

That’s what you call a bad teacher.

This article has been updated to correct an error conflating Cardinal Tobin of Newark with Bishop Tobin of Providence, Rhode Island.

This is why I left the Catholic church. I love the history. I love the Sacraments. I have very fond memories of excellent teachers, nuns and priests at Catholic schools in NJ. But, they have lost their way. It seems the Church is only concerned with embracing culture, not teaching scripture and the true meaning of being a Christian.

The final nail in my Catholic coffin was the Sunday service after the Obergefell decision. I, and many of my friends were fully expecting the priest to address it. Not one peep in the sermon about it. Not one peep since. Indeed, nothing from Catholic hierarchy about a decision that fundamentally changes the perspective of marriage and family. Many Catholics have serious misgivings about the Church’s silence, or outright confusion, on this issue. I am afraid that many Catholics have been lead astray because all they have for guidance is the very noisy and all-present secular position on gay “marriage” and LGBT nonsense. Crickets from the Catholic church.

This was not an easy decision for me. I am 50 years old and a life-long Catholic. I am deeply saddened that I cannot share with my kids the same wonderful experience I had in the Catholic family. But, the Church has changed. Dramatically, and for the worse. Catholic dogma is all over the map on so many fundamental issues, and I will not knowingly expose my family to this confusion in the Church. My advice to Catholics looking for answers: find a church that is all about teaching and unpacking scripture. The answers to every question in life are found in scripture.

    • Jennifer Hartline

I hear you, and I understand your heartache, but leaving the Eucharist is not the answer. You’re only harming yourself, friend. Come back and fight. To whom else will you go? Now is the time for faithful Catholics to be faithful and FIGHT.

    • LeticiaVelasquez

My pastor in the height of the priestly pederasty scandals, said, “Jesus chose 12 apostles, and one betrayed Him. Don’t leave Jesus for Judas”. Come home and help us clean up the Church.

      • Suzanne Morgan McConnell

Yes..come home!! I agree with Leticia!

      • RWDave

Amen! Otherwise, who do you worship? God…or yourself?

      • ImaginaryDomain

Thank you very much for your comments. My prayers are with you. Please see my reply to raphaelheals. I’m not leaving Jesus for Judas. I’m turning away from the devil for Jesus! The CC has become the very apostate we are warned about throughout the bible, most notably in Revelation. Please be wary of it and please remember Christ’s angry reaction to religion gone astray!!

    • raphaelheals

Dear Imaginary, by leaving the Catholic Church, you only add to the tearing away of the Mystical Body. You will not be at peace until you return to the sacraments. Christ is your Food for the journey. Even if the CC looks like a dead corpse I will remain with her at the foot of the cross until Christ returns. Scripture speaks about these days that we are living through and so does the Blessed Mother. I place you into Mary’s Immaculate Heart and will keep you in my prayers

      • ImaginaryDomain

First, I very much appreciate your thoughtful and prayerful comments. The CC of today is not at all what Christ commanded of us. Remember the only time Christ got angry? Guess what, it was at religion and the apostate it had become. I am convinced that Christ would have the same reaction to the CC were He alive today. And please, lest we ever forget the generational stain of the pedophiles running amok in the CC throughout the world. The harm they caused to millions of families is still being counted (“it is better that you kill yourself than harm a child”).

For now I’m sticking to bible study with my family and friends through a local pastor. Maybe someday the CC will see the error of it’s ways, but until then it will continue to lose it’s moral authority and it will continue to lose people by the millions.

        • raphaelheals

Dearest Imaginary, in the Divine Mercy Sunday novena chaplet that Christ gave to St. Faustina ( that we are in the middle of right now), Jesus asks Faustina, to each day, bring another group of people to Him. On the fifth day Jesus asks for ‘THE SOULS OF THOSE WHO HAVE SEPERATED THEMSELVES FROM MY CHURCH AND IMMERSE THEM IN THE OCEAN OF MY MERCY. DURING MY BITTER PASSION THEY TORE AT MY BODY AND HEART, THAT IS, MY CHURCH. AS THEY RETURN TO UNITY WITH THE CHURCH, MY WOUNDS HEAL AND IN THIS WAY THEY ALLEVIATE MY PASSION.” So in truth, you add to Christ’s sufferings by your absence and denial of her as she lives out in a Mystical Way the same sufferings that Christ endured in His Passion. Part of the mystical sufferings are all the scandalous behaviors of priests, the lukewarmness of most who call themselves Catholic, the tearing away at the Liturgy, the theological errors that are taught and followed. But man seems to decide for himself that he knows better than the CC that Christ instituted. Yes, she is wounded, as Christ was wounded. It is the same as when Christ said to Paul….”Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting ME”, when he was persecuting the church. You NEED the Eucharist and Confession in order to undergo this grave trial that the church is living through. The times are going to get much worse but we know that God will be faithful to his promises. We are living in the era of Christ’s Divine Mercy that is being poured out upon us in order to save as many souls as possible before He comes as the Just Judge. These frightful days are getting closer and closer. We are Servants of the King and our service to Him includes being a loyal servant until the bitter end. You will be rewarded beyond measure when he returns and sees you in His service to him through His church. You must not despair. He is worthy of our trust. Oh He is so very worthy of our trust. Please don’t allow the disobedience of others to guide your decisions. Christ promised that the gates of hell shall not prevail against his church. May the Risen Christ fill you with His peace. Alleluia.

          • ImaginaryDomain

But see, Christ didn’t start the Catholic church. Early Christianity was nothing at all like the CC of today, or even 1000+ years ago. For the first several hundred years in early Christianity, there were no sacraments other than baptism, and even that was very informal. This myth that Catholics have laid claim to Peter (upon this rock I will build my church) did not mean, and was never meant to mean, that Peter was to start the Catholic church. Nor did he! Peter proclaimed the good news not as a Catholic, but as a Christian.

The Church, in Christs’ time and for several hundred years thereafter, was the community of Christians who went out and proclaimed the good news. None of them were Catholic, either.

I stand with the Church as Christ meant it and as taught in the New Testament. Please understand I speak to you with the utmost reverence and respect. I simply do not agree that the CC is the only path to God.

          • raphaelheals

If you read the Early Church Fathers you will see that the Mass ( which is the summit of our faith) was celebrated immediately. The Last Supper was the night that Christ instituted the Eucharist….His very Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity and also the priesthood.. Christ’s words..not mine..are that ‘unless you eat my body and blood you have no life in you.” The Early Church fathers have made things crystal clear for many, including Scott Hahn, who was a brilliant man but still in the dark about the Eucharist and the CC until he faithfully followed where Christ lead him…from Calvanism into the heart of the Catholic Church. It is simply a grave error to say that there were no sacraments other than baptism for several hundred years. The Eucharist was present from the very beginning. Seek the truth and you will find it. It is not only in the New Testament that we find Christ. He is spoken of repeatedly in the Old Testament. Read Isaiah 53.Our Lenten readings are full of His presence through the prophets. The New is the fulfillment of the Old. The Real Presence was a stumbling block for many disciples who followed Christ and they walked away from him and dear Jesus looked to his Apostles and said..’….are you going to leave me too? And Peter said…Lord to whom shall we go, you have the words of everlasting life!.” This is still a stumbling block for those who are outside the church today. Read St. Justin’s account of the Mass. I bet you can find it if you look on line under church fathers. God bless you my friend in Christ.

          • ImaginaryDomain

Thanks for the St. Justin reference. I’ll dive in later…

  • Gary

LOL! Ah, those Catholics! Tobin is a lot like all of the popes. He might even be the next pope.

    • LeticiaVelasquez

And yet the Church will survive, as Jesus promised, despite these poor souls. Pray for them.

      • Gary

The Catholic Church is NOT the Church Jesus talked about in the New Testament.

        • RWDave

Isn’t there some fundamentalist proddy site where you’d feel more comfortable?

          • Gary

I don’t know. Can you recommend one?

          • RWDave

Don’t have a clue. I don’t go to their discussions and troll them.

        • samton909

No, I know. You invented your own church, because YOU read the bible and YOU are the only one who knows what it means. Ha Ha.

          • Gary

I didn’t invent a church. It has been here since Christ was on earth. And it is NOT the catholic church.

          • samton909

Yes, and it was the CATHOLIC church up until Martin Luther taught you all to form your own churches based on whatever goofy thing you can latch on to.

    • samton909

Don’t you get bored being a dork?

  • Michael Kilburg

Do they proof read and fact check their work? Cardinal Tobin of Newark, NJ and Bishop Tobin of Providence, RI are two different people. Bishop Tobin is still the Bishop of Providence, RI!

    • Zmirak

The correction has been made and noted. Thank you.

      • LeticiaVelasquez

Good thing, Bishop Tobin of Providence railed against homosexual “marriage” in his diocesan newspaper and is a wonderful teacher of souls, praying outside abortion mills and challenging pro-abortion Catholic politicians.

        • Zmirak

Yes, I’m very sorry for the confusion. Glad to hear that about Bishop of Tobin of Providence.

  • Jennifer Hartline

Joseph Sciambra is the bravest man alive. He has a genuine love for the Church, and a genuine love for people seduced by and trapped in the homosexual lie. The Church in America needs to listen to him and follow his example.

  • Timothy Horton

Terrible, just terrible. A man of God and leader of his church teaches tolerance and inclusiveness for all God’s children instead of rejection and prejudice. What is this world coming to?

    • Patmos

There’s a reason Jesus said to those he showed mercy, “Go forth and sin no more.” For if there was no sin there would be no need for grace, and there would be no need for the teachings of Jesus at all, teachings which lead a person out of the desire to sin in the first place.

The notion that grace is somehow a license to sin is so utterly backwards and unsupported by scripture that I have a hard time believing any honest person with the intellectual capability of at least a 4th grader can come to the conclusion that Jesus preached tolerance.

This stuff isn’t that hard. Get over yourself, and quit making it all about you.

      • Timothy Horton

Why would you want to follow someone who preached intolerance and hatred? Seems to violate the Golden Rule.

        • Patmos

If I was living an abomination and was on my way to hell, then yes I would want someone to tell me about it, and not just “tolerate” what I was doing in some twisted and selfish interpretation of a very real doctrine that has been helping people for thousands of years. It is a doctrine that will outlast even heaven and earth.

Living by the Spirit is not that difficult, in fact it lifts burdens off of people, and places them above that which would have them sin in the first place. For even when we were dead in trespass and sin God raised us up together and made us sit together with Christ, far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named.

The word of God is not just some lofty idea or man made philosophy, it is the power of God that has the ability to get into a person’s heart and change it, not by works of the law but by the recognition of grace and the love God has for creation. That love itself will serve the same purpose of the law, even to a greater degree than the law.

To this point The Apostle Paul wrote in one of his letters that “the love of Christ constraineth us”. Furthermore Jesus said that light has come into the world. For the promise of The Holy Spirit is for “as many as the Lord our God shall call.”

He is calling you right now, with a peace that passes understanding.

          • Timothy Horton

If I was living an abomination and was on my way to hell, then yes I would want someone to tell me about it, and not just “tolerate” what I was doing in some twisted and selfish interpretation of a very real doctrine that has been helping people for thousands of years. It is a doctrine that will outlast even heaven and earth

How about if you were just an average person quietly trying to live your life the best you can and some religiously motivated A-hole started harassing you, calling you a sinner and an abomination? Not for anything bad you’ve done to anyone but just for being who you are? I’d say the A-hole should get the bum’s rush.

          • RWDave

Ok, Gaga. “Born that way” is one GIANT lie.

          • Timothy Horton

Please describe for us how and when you made the conscious choice of your sexual orientation.

Since you claim others do it you must have done it yourself, right?

          • RWDave

I had a normal father and a normal mother. That’s all it takes. Show me a gay, and I’ll show you someone with deep-seated psychological problems stemming from abuse, neglect, incest, divorce, abandonment, substance abuse, or something else that happened in the formative years.

          • Timothy Horton

You ignored the question. How and when did you make the conscious choice of your sexual orientation?

Or are you admitting you didn’t consciously choose were just spouting ignorance above?

          • RWDave

I didn’t have to, I was born male, therefore I behave as a male is designed to behave. It’s called natural law. When did a water molecule decide to flow from a high point to a low point?

          • Timothy Horton

So you didn’t consciously choose your sexual orientation yet you claim with zero evidence others do. Makes you quite the hypocrite, yes?

          • RWDave

            No.

          • Mike Painter

A man does not wake up one morning, say, “I’m going to behave like a male isn’t supposed to behave because I hate God.” That’s not happening. No guy who was attracted to girls his whole life (if everyone truly is naturally attracted to the opposite sex) is going to up and abandon girls for guys he was never attracted to in the first place all because he “hates God” or wants to break “natural law.” That makes zero sense. It only makes sense that he was attracted to guys from the start. Why? No one is sure. It is a biological anomaly. But it is not a choice and it isn’t the result of bad experiences or moral failing. You can’t say for a fact that everyone attracted to the same sex was traumatized or indulges in an immoral life that would cause them to be in a state of same-sex attraction. Being attracted to the same sex is no one’s fault. It’s simply an attribute.

          • Timothy Horton

I’m afraid it’s hopeless Mike. These people weren’t reasoned into their intolerance, they can’t be reasoned out of it. They were indoctrinated into it at an early age and fed a steady diet ever since.

The sad fact is if their Bible said being left-handed was a sin these folks would be demanding left-handed scissors be made illegal and picketing Major League Baseball demanding all the “immoral” left-handed pitchers and batters be fired for cause.

          • Mike Painter

I suppose you’re absolutely right, sadly. Only if someone they deeply loved turned out to be gay, might they change. And even then, it’s not guaranteed. What’s darkly funny about your words is that the left handed once were considered immoral and demon possessed as well. I should probably stop reading their comments as to not be tempted to reply. Good job on your responses to the anti-March for Science stuff as well. I would comment also, but I dont know enough to be able to.

          • Timothy Horton

Thanks. I encourage you to keep speaking up though, keep fighting the good fight against bigotry and prejudice. If you’re wondering about my “dog in the fight” I’m straight, been married for 25 years to a wonderful woman. We live near SF and work / play / interact with LGBT folks all the time. I don’t have to tell you they’re just like everyone else – they have dreams, have faults, laugh, cry, feel just as everyone else does. They’re just people. I’ve also seen up close and personal the damaging effects discrimination and prejudice have which is why I speak up too.

          • Mike Painter

You are right about the need to continue to speak up. I don’t guess you can expect people to fall to their knees and accept your logic if they are far gone into indoctrination, but someone who is on the fence might be moved by what you say, definitely. Thanks for your support. I’m gay myself if that wasn’t clear. I hope to have a long-lasting happy marriage like yours one day. I’d say the future still looks pretty bright on continued gay acceptance, so there is hope for sure.

          • RWDave

Actually, I had a friend that did EXACTLY that. Dropped out of RCIA (adult education to become Catholic), stated he was an atheist, divorced his wife, proclaimed he was gay, and ran off with some guy.

          • Mike Painter

He was gay the whole time. He was in the church and married to a woman to try to conform and find acceptance because he was scared what people would think of him if he were honest about being gay. He probably hurt that poor woman by not being able to give her real intimacy. He probably realized keeping up his facade was damaging, accepted himself, then rejected the religion that had been crushing him.

          • Timothy Horton

How do explain the studies of twins raised in the identical environment where one turned out gay and one straight?

          • RWDave

One has psychological problems, and the other doesn’t…or at least the same psychological problems.

          • Timothy Horton

You forgot your evidence. Ignorance based and worthless anti-gay claims are a dime a dozen.

          • RWDave

            Yup. Show me where I’m:
            1. Anti gay
            2. Ignorant of any facts?

          • Timothy Horton

You just claimed pairs of twins where one is gay must have “deep-seated psychological problems stemming from abuse, neglect, incest, divorce, abandonment, substance abuse, or something else that happened in the formative years.” In fact you claimed ALL gays fit that description.

That’s total BS unless you can support the claim, which you can’t.

          • RWDave

They do. Does that mean that I hate them? Gee, I must hate my friend because he has the flu.

          • Timothy Horton

            They do.

Total BS unless you can support the claim, which you can’t. All of the scientific literature and studies on human sexuality plus the personal testimony of millions of non-hetero folks show you’re wrong.

          • RWDave

It matters not whether I’m in a minority or majority. If five billion people said the sky was green, would that make it so?

          • Michael Marsh

Society! One accepted evil, the other good. Simple as that.

          • Timothy Horton

Did it hurt when you pulled that silly non-answer out of your orifice?

          • Michael Marsh

Hey, hold on just one minute brother!! Born that way is not one GIANT lie. I believe that God created me in His image to become holy and pure. To love Him above anything else. To accept all that is pure and holy and reject all that is impure and evil. To serve Jesus Christ with every beat of my heart. And yep, I was born that way. 🙂

          • RWDave

            I stand corrected.

          • samton909

You mean like if you were a pedophile, and someone started calling you on it, JUST FOR BEING WHO YOU ARE?

          • Timothy Horton

I said not for anything bad you’ve done to anyone. Do you not understand that pedophilia is extremely harmful to the victim?

      • Michael Marsh

I actually know Christians that try to lead others to Christ through pre-marital sex. Where’s that in the Bible?

        • Michael Marsh

Maybe a twisted version of Galatians 5:24?

    • samton909

He is not teaching tolerance and inclusiveness. He is ignoring much of Catholic teaching. Anyway, you have used up those fake words “tolerance and inclusiveness” They are meaningless buzzwords, signifying the total rejection of reason and thought. Meaningless emotionalisms, designed to cloud thought.

      • Timothy Horton

He is not teaching tolerance and inclusiveness.

Sure he is. For some reason that seems to upset you.

        • RWDave

Leading souls to hell by not teaching the Truth is upsetting, especially when it involves the negligence of a prelate. Tell me, Timothy, do YOU want to be loved, or just “tolerated”?

          • Timothy Horton

“Hell” is a mythical place. Teaching understanding and acceptance here on Earth towards real people is a lot more valuable to society that pandering to your personal religious beliefs.

          • Shaquille Harvey

Why timothy who said we should accept people, what for, you keep saying that we must accept every person as if there is an ultimate standard everyone should live by? but if everyone is nothing more than meat packed robots who came about this rock by time + matter + chance and is nothing more than molecules in motion who have no real purpose other than procreating and one day dying should we ought to care? where in your worldview says that we should care, and where in your worldview is there morality, timothy?

          • Timothy Horton

where in your worldview is there morality, timothy?

My morality comes from treating my follow humans as equals, with dignity and respect, and not treating them as “abominations” because a 2000 year old book tells you to.

I’ll take mine over yours any day.

          • Shaquille Harvey

Timothy:My morality comes from treating my fellow humans as equals, with dignity and respect, and not treating them as “abominations” because a 2000 year old book tells you to.

I’ll take mine over yours any day.

my response: “My morality comes from treating my fellow humans as equals, with dignity and respect, ” really timothy that simple, yet you go around calling other people names simply for not showing the same view as you, you also insult other people’s world views, religious and cultures simply because they don’t agree to homosexuality
another point timothy just because someone does not agree to something does not mean they are out to get them or kill them or that thing. many people on this site or comment section who expressed their views on homosexuality, those who disagree on it , have stated they do not hate homosexuals and stated that they care for gays and those living in the gay community even though as they state they are living in sin, many christians on this site wish to know them so they bring to Christ as most would acknowledge all christians are sinners, and just like all sinners are in need of repentance. they do not want to kill the gays timothy.

“and not treating them as “abominations” because a 2000 year old book tells you to.” abominations, yet timothy let me ask you would you say to those who are paedophiles or incestuous? because I can guess the answer.what would say about their lifestyles?
by the way most people writing ion this site don’t views homosexuals as abomination, thanks for generalising though , the people here who are predominantly are christian view all people including themselves as sinners in need of a saviour as aligning with christian thought.they don’t view homosexuals as being abominations, rather that the people who are gay are living sin and that homosexuality is the sin. the sin being the abomination.
“because a 2000 year old book tells you to.”
1.first of all “because a 2000 year old book tells you to” is not a good answer. If there is such a thing as absolute morality then absolute morality would of existed throughout human history, it would existed 2000 years ago as it would today, the age of it should not need to matter.
2.if the bible is true, if what it says is true then why should not matter especially if it correlates to absolute morality?
3.the bible, referring to the 2000 year old book, is not a 2000 year old book the bible was written over an extensive period with the last portions, the new testament were written roughly almost 2000 years ago as they are coming into account with the events that took place then i.e gospel accounts.why should the bible be ignored because of its age considering the bible and the Judaeo-christian thought have helped shaped the western world?
            4. by what absolute standard are you able to judge the bible? by what absolute standard is your views or the ones you represent Superior to 2000 year old book and why should we all follow it?
            pleas answer!

          • Timothy Horton

(snip the long blithering attempt to justify the homophobic bigotry)

You demonize and ostracize a minority group, discriminate against them and cause them tremendous mental and physical damage, for NO OTHER REASON than your book tells you to.

Don’t expect sympathy from any moral person.

          • Shaquille Harvey

Timothy:(snip the long blithering attempt to justify the homophobic bigotry)

You demonize and ostracize a minority group, discriminate against them and cause them tremendous mental and physical damage, for NO OTHER REASON than your book tells you to.

Don’t expect sympathy from any moral person.

my response:(snip the long blithering attempt to justify the homophobic bigotry) wow what a way to ignore someone and their questions”snip the long blithering attempt to justify the homophobic bigotry” translation ” I haven’t got any real sound arguments I am just going call people names such as bigot and think I have one with sound brilliant dialogue” you think calling people bigots makes you sound intelligent well it doesn’t it just make you sound like an ignorant fool on record.
you have still ignored my questions timothy.

“You demonize and ostracize a minority group, discriminate against them and cause them tremendous mental and physical damage”
“You demonize and ostracize a minority group, discriminate against them” wow really gay people aren’t the only ones in western society to get ostracised, gay people aren’t the only ones to get discriminated in the west no matter how many times you keep saying it.
“and cause them tremendous mental and physical damage” any actual proof of this, or is this just another vague statement you keep throwing out.
“for NO OTHER REASON than your book tells you to.” again does not answer my question on absolute morality does not even give me reasons why I should listen him
timothy you keep blurting out bigot to everyone who does not agree to homosexuality yet you don’t give us real reasons why we should accept it or agree to it whole heart-idly you don’t even show what transcendent morality says that we are in the wrong or why gay is a morally good thing or even to judge a 2000 year old book by .You keep saying “moral person” but don’t define what moral we should live by or why we should live under it

“Don’t expect sympathy from any moral person.”
wow so now we should live under your judgement, yours and your Ike.
Timothy don’t try and claim you are defending any or all minority groups because you are not. The only group you defend is those who are in the LGBT community, that is it

          • Timothy Horton

gay people aren’t the only ones in western society to get ostracised, gay people aren’t the only ones to get discriminated in the west no matter how many times you keep saying it

Tremendous logic there. “There are other minorities besides gays who get unfairly discriminated against therefore my crappy treatment of gays as second class citizens is justified.”

Still you wonder why young people are leaving your “moral” church in droves.

          • Shaquille Harvey

Timothy:Tremendous logic there. “There are other minorities besides gays who get unfairly discriminated against therefore my crappy treatment of gays as second class citizens is justified.”

my response: no timothy, tremendous logic is when you ignore my questions and make ignorant and broad statements that I and others never made i.e “therefore my crappy treatment of gays as second class citizens is justified.” one, when did I say I want gays to be treated as second class citizens?
two,how if I disagree with someone or how they live their lifestyle do I want them to be killed, treated as “second class citizens” or want them to be ostracised?
three, I made the statement about other minorities because you make out that gays in west are living in fear or that equivalence to other societies, christians are pushing gays off of roofs. you also seem to have an obsession with homosexuality.

as for”Still you wonder why young people are leaving your “moral” church in droves.”

well could be that the churches have not been the churches for some time now and have become a place where people don’t know what the faith is or why Christians believe what they do? also trying to suggest that young people leaving the church means they are now living superior lives is a tad presumptuous considering they have to explain what moral they now live by, their now worldview and why gay is a morally good thing. you should also take into account that young people have had not the best track when it comes to best example considering the fact many want safe spaces and are blocking any person coming into college that has a worldview different from theirs, and when confronted they protest(riot).

          • Timothy Horton

how if I disagree with someone or how they live their lifestyle do I want them to be killed, treated as “second class citizens” or want them to be ostracised?

By trying to deny them equal civil rights in areas of marriage, housing, jobs, adoption, etc. By arguing you should be allowed to ignore anti-discrimination laws. By comparing them to pedophiles.

How many more do you need?

I made the statement about other minorities because you make out that gays in west are living in fear or that equivalence to other societies, christians are pushing gays off of roofs

More genius. “we aren’t actively murdering gays like other religions do so the discrimination and harm we do inflict on them is OK”.

You’re a real piece of work.

          • Shaquille Harvey

timothy:By trying to deny them equal civil rights in areas of marriage, housing, jobs, adoption, etc. By arguing you should be allowed to ignore anti-discrimination laws.

my response:”By trying to deny them equal civil rights in areas of marriage, housing, jobs, adoption, etc.”
1.what rights are they being denied?
            2. when are they now being denied these rights?
3.why are these rights and should they be applied to all? if so why? if some groups of people are excluded that you think should not be included for these rights why?
            4. why are gays in need of these civil rights?
are these actually rights and by what standard are these rights?
where do these rights come from and how can i be determined
if a person does not agree how are bad by what standard are they falling short by?

“By arguing you should be allowed to ignore anti-discrimination laws.” why do people need to follow these laws again what standard and why will they be judge harshly if they don’t?

            timothy:By comparing them to pedophiles.

my response: I did not I was asking a question, you did not answer it.

timothy: How many more do you need?

my response: actual proof not vague statements

timothy: More genius. “we aren’t actively murdering gays like other religions do so the discrimination and harm we do inflict on them is OK”.

my response:”we aren’t actively murdering gays like other religions do so the discrimination and harm we do inflict on them is OK”.
            1. making broad statements again
2.pleas note that its not religions but also societies, also not all are activley killing them
            3. by what standard are they wrong and you can judge thier society by?
            4. what harm are we in the west inflicting

Also note most societies don’t live by guilt. that is they live by an honour and shame basis.Something like guilt is an inward approach and something foreign to them especially if the also a collectivist society.

Timothy:You’re a real piece of work.

my response: what, why do you need to get emotionally offensive? I was trying to have a genouin discussion your the one calling me, as well as others names and actvly being vulgar

          • clarkma5

Lately I have been loving the teachings of Jesus Christ, but I’ve always found a lot of his followers to be real…anti-christs.

          • Timothy Horton

            Mahatma Gandhi said it best:

“I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ.”

          • Timothy Horton

You keep saying “moral person” but don’t define what moral we should live by or why we should live under it

Try the Golden Rule. Think about it the next time before you demonize an entire minority group by comparing them to pedophiles.

          • Shaquille Harvey

            The golden rule
            is a biblical principle

For someone who likes to insult christians you like to steal biblical principles and use them on all people including Christians. but that statement can work is if 1. there is absolute morality 2. that the absolute morality correlates with biblical principles 3. the god of the bible is the ultimate standard of authority and 4. that when taken as a whole all the principles(biblical) are taken seriously.

“Think about it the next time before you demonize an entire minority group by comparing them to pedophiles.” wow again you make broad statements I never made.
i was asking those who are paedophiles or live incestuous lifestyles what would you think of them, would you think they are living in abominate lifestyles? and would judge them in a negative light or view? would you say that they are living that is immoral and contrary to what should be?
I was not making a comparative statement that gays are the exact same as paedophiles.
but please do tell me how if a person was to make the statement and comparing gays to paedophiles, by what standard would be wrong?

          • Timothy Horton

The golden rule is a biblical principle

Then why do so many Bible worshiping people like yourself refuse to follow it?

You equated gays with pedophiles yet if someone did that to you you’d scream bloody murder.

          • Shaquille Harvey

            what

timothy:You equated gays with pedophiles yet if someone did that to you you’d scream bloody murder.

my response: no I did not I asked you a question, you did not answer it . “yet if someone did that to you you’d scream bloody murder”. for what asking a question

timothy:The golden rule is a biblical principle
Then why do so many Bible worshiping people like yourself refuse to follow it?

my response:In order for a christian to take the golden rule seriously like all bible worshippers( as you put it) they should take everything else in the bible including this one seriously

23Jesus replied, “All who love me will do what I say. My Father will love them, and we will come and make our home with each of them. 24Anyone who doesn’t love me will not obey me. And remember, my words are not my own. What I am telling you is from the Father who sent me

How about disagreeing with people who like to put certain body parts in certain unmentionable places that causes them to have diseases?

          • Timothy Horton

You mean like many hetero couples do?

          • Michael Marsh

            Not to mention wearing diapers.

          • Timothy Horton

You mean like some hetero couples do?

          • Gary

You have no morality. Just opinions that cannot be proven true.

          • RWDave

Ah! So we get to the truth! You hate people who have religious beliefs. Who’s the bigot here? Tell me, Timothy…what deviant behavior of yours are you trying to justify?

          • Timothy Horton

You hate people who have religious beliefs.

No. I hate people who harm innocent others in the name of their twisted beliefs.

            Who’s the bigot here?

            That would be you.

          • RWDave

Heh! And your answer to my question? Yeah, didn’t think you would answer.

          • samton909

See, the tolerant one is himself an enormous bigot, because he simply defines anyone not like him as “harming others” for having different beliefs than him. Pathetic, childlike behavior, designed to shut down thought and debate. But of course, that is what they have to do because they can’t win if we are allowed to tell the truth about what they advocate.

          • Timothy Horton

LOL! Here we go again. “You’re a bigot against my hateful discrimination of minorities”.

Yes, In am bigoted against those who harm others for no good reason.

          • Gary

You aren’t the judge of who is harming others, or how valid their reasons might be.

          • Gary

Stop it. You cannot prove that anyone is doing anything that is either wrong or right.

          • samton909

You don’t even follow your own rules. You have zero tolerance and zero inclusivity. I’ve seen your nasty comments before.

        • samton909

No he is not. For some reason you are not thinking, and like to hide behind child like buzzwords like tolerance and inclusive, You sure are not tolerant and inclusive.

          • Timothy Horton

I’m not the one arguing for legalized discrimination against a minority just because my religion teaches me to hate.

    • davidrev17

Timothy, if you’re going to refer to phrases thought to be biblically sound, or relevant, at least make sure that such is accurately stated; and here’s the critical [truthful] distinction:

Please know that all members of the species Homo sapiens are part of God’s “CREATION,” or “created order” – just like everything else in this “contingently existing universe”; a concept of which has been a sound, decades-long 20th & 21st-century “scientific” inference, or implication, in what the Bible has identified as “creation Ex-nihilo” – i.e., something [or everything] from literal NOthing. (Secular scientists call it “Big Bang Cosmology.”)

However, when you used the phrase “all God’s children,” the only correct definition we have in Holy Scripture, clearly identifies “all God’s children” as exemplifying those who’ve been “born again” (literally “born from above” = Greek “anothen”) – as in the Lord Jesus’ teaching in John chapter 3.

So this designation includes ALL those who’ve genuinely “repented” of their past [“fallen”] sin-stained lives, and received forgiveness for their sins, thus a “new heart,” as their sins were washed clean, or “white as snow,” through the “blood” & “body” of our substitutionary sacrifice, the “Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.”

Which means, of course, that such individuals have essentially been spiritually transferred FROM the “First [“fallen”] Adam” – into which EVERY male & female member of the species Homo sapiens is “physically” born, through their earthly parents, sometimes referred to as the “race of the damned” – INTO the “Second Adam,” meaning the actual “FAMILY OF GOD”…thus the NEW spiritual “race of the redeemed”; as the Lord Jesus made this possible for everyone who receives that spiritual “pardon.”

So this “man of God,” to whom you’ve referred above, as “teaching tolerance and forgiveness for all God’s children”; couldn’t possibly be engaged in such utterly futile activity, because the Holy Scriptures teach the opposite “truth,” in at least five (5) places, that “…ONLY GOD KNOWS THOSE WHO ARE HIS.” (2 Timothy 2:19) Hence, there’s NO such animal as “all God’s children,” when it comes to describing everyone that’s ever existed here in God’s “created-order.” However, there IS still time for you to receive forgiveness for your sins, through the Lord Jesus Christ, and finally become one of “God’s children” thus “receiving the gift of eternal life.” But will you Timothy? His invitation has not yet been withdrawn!

  • Patmos

“this retreat offers a special opportunity for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender persons to celebrate their identity”

Sure, because celebrating abominations is exactly what God wants.

  • Gary

You will never find God in the catholic church. Run from the catholics if you have to.

    • RWDave

Gee. That was relevant and intelligent.

      • Gary

        Yes. Both.

        • RWDave

          Nice try.

    • samton909

Never listen to a guy on the internet named “Gary”

    • Yankeegator

Modernist American Folkchristians and their super fun, rock band, entertain me prayer halls, with all zeal for American Jesus and his false profits and satanic protestant ministers spread all over Christiandom the virus of sola scriptura and sola fede with thousands of heretical sects, taking Scriptural text out of context creating pretext!!!

You should love our new Pope. He’s as much a Protestant rebel as you.

      • Gary

I do love your new Pope. I think he’s as much of a reprobate as you are. And I think he is a good fit for your pagan “church”.

        • Yankeegator

So it is Gary’s church with Pope Gary at the helm. The Holy Spirit waited 2000 years for you to come along and get it right and teach all of us. Sola Scripture is strait from the pit of Hell.

          • Gary

I know more about God than all the Popes combined. By the way, all the dead ones are in Hell. So is mother Teresa.

          • RWDave

I guess time will tell, won’t it, Gary?

          • Gary

It sure will. And won’t you be surprised.

          • Yankeegator

Um Ok there. Another heretical Delusional American Jesus Worshiper following a Johnny Come Lately prayer group. Baptists don’t even agree with the other Baptists down the street.

Your spiritual ancestors stem from the demon possessed heretic Martin Luther.

          • Gary

Is it safe to assume you agree with Tobin and the Pope who promoted him? Very likely.

Luther is not in my line. Neither is Vito Corleone.

          • Yankeegator

Sure he is. All the rebellion started with Him and Henry The VIII. He’s the head of all the Baptist American Jesus followers. He started the Sola Scriptura error and they started splitting and splitting that even today your little Baptist Building can’t even agree with the Baptist Building down the street. There will be some guy or women in you building who will disagree with American Jesus preacher Bob and open up a store front group down the road. Might even be you Pope Gary.

Please don’t insult me with the Trail of Blood garbage. Nobody believes the Trail of Blood malarkey. I rank it up there with the Book of Mormon.

Pope Francis and Tobin are Protestant infiltrators. Again they agree with you more than actual Catholics.

          • Gary

You believe that catholic BS, so its no surprise that you believe a lot of other BS.

          • llew jones

See you are having great fun Garry but you don’t have much real opposition. What almost shocks me is noticing how little the hard line disciples of the Church of Rome know about Christianity. I noticed one of them has learned, from looking at a crucifix, that Jesus dead body still resides in “his church”. Obviously he has never read the bible. Perhaps they should all start by reading the apostle Peter’s NT epistles (you know Peter the “first Pope”), where he tells us who are the only priests left after our Great High Priest put all the “sin atoning ones” out of business. No more “pros” but now, says Peter, every believer is a priest to offer the sacrifice of praise, without any go betweens, directly to God and to the resurrected Lamb, who is now glorified and exalted to the highest place in the universe. Namely seated at God’s right hand. Peter the inspired apostle boldly calls us who trust in Christ and Christ alone for salvation, a kingdom of priests. Better than the Jews who could never have a priest who was from the kingly line of Judah but only those from the tribe of Levi allowed. Which OT priests Peter clearly has in mind.

Though we may disagree with Luther on many things he along with the other Reformers was used by God to restore the bible to the people. The Church of Rome killed the Brit William Tyndale for translating the bible into English so I guess it’s no wonder that some of the more Medieval believers here, unlike the Catholic Journos on The Stream, have never read the bible. Anyway the present Pope is a bit of a fan of Luther and the Reformation:

“The Reformation as a restoration of catholicity”

            Pope praises Luther
October 31, 2016 by Gene Veith

Pope Francis is set to celebrate Reformation Day in a joint service with Swedish Lutherans. A story from NPR quotes him praising Luther. It’s appropriate for Catholics to celebrate Reformation Day! As Pope Francis says, the church had become extremely corrupt. Without the Reformation, there would be no Counter-Reformation, which is where much of today’s Catholicism and Catholic lay piety comes from ….

Michael – Gary is a member of the Westboro Baptist Church. They hate everyone especially Catholics.

          • Michael Marsh

Oh, so that explains it. Hmm, what is it that the word of God tells us about those who love God, but also expresses hate? 1st John 4:20. Gary you should read that and then pray that the Lord would fill your heart with love for all people. As Jesus tells us; ” If you only love those who love you, what good is that?” So come on Gary, don’t be a Pagan.

          • Michael Marsh

Dear Gary. I offer you this day all my prayers, works, joys and sufferings. I ask this in the name of Gary. Amen.

wrong. The Catholic Church is where we the Body of Christ suffer and make up for what was lacking in the sufferings of Christ (cf. St. Paul on that one). Why do you suppose we have the crucifix and not just the cross? The Living Body of Jesus is in The Catholic Church…and you don’t know or don’t believe it….You are missing the real thrill.

      • Gary

You’re full of crap. So is the Pope.

        • RWDave

My, what a nice Christian you are!

          • Gary

            Thanks.

        • mortimer zilch

you should comment about things you know about…you obviously know NEXT TO NOTHING about the Catholic Church.

          • Gary

I know enough about it to know to stay away from it.

          • mortimer zilch

your final distance from The Catholic Church will be HELL if you don’t get sensible and hear the Truth.

  • James B

Things have been in a state of free fall since Vatican II anyway. At this rate Tobin’s successor will probably have to sell the Cathedral.

  • Rclifton

A useless evil pope, a bunch of useless and evil cardinals, a bunch of useless and evil bishops…God bless and save our Church from Satan!

    • Tanya Wersinger

I don’t agree about your comment on the Pope. But within the hierarchy their are many who are going to be surprised when their lives end, it won’t be cozy and fun, that’s for sure. Poor souls.

  • mortimer zilch

it was a power play by the Cathedral staff…all gay…just an awful bunch of creeps. Talk about “Drain The Swamp”…it’s PURGE THE CATHEDRAL !!

  • Maggie Sullivan

Another Bishop supporting sodomy…………nothing new here.

    • mortimer zilch

they bend over FORWARD to serve the “faithful”.

      • RWDave

        Ok, I’ll admit it…I laughed a little!

    • Gary

So does the Pope. Every catholic does. If they didn’t they would get out of the catholic church.

    • Nicholas

They are non-Catholics in clerical garb. They treat the faith like it’s all a big game.

  • Jim Walker

Did anyone of you notice the robe he is wearing ? If you observed closely, the neck is a loop with a cross – This is the sign of the ankh…

  • Eugene

Calling all faithful Catholics in the Newark archdiocese STOP All donations to this morally bankrupt shepherd

  • Timothy Horton

You have to applaud Cardinal Tobin. It’s about time someone in the church took the lead and tried to break the self perpetuating vicious circle of indoctrinated intolerance and prejudices against a harmless minority.

    • Gary

You haven’t proven that there is anything wrong with intolerance and prejudice against homosexuals. And you won’t, because you can’t. Morality to you is subjective. That means it is nothing more than your opinion.

      • Timothy Horton

In this country the standard is innocent until proven guilty. You and your fellow bigots have done absolutely nothing to show the non-hetero minority is deserving of your harmful intolerance and prejudice. All you can offer is “my religious beliefs teach me so” which is not an acceptable reason for secular legal discrimination.

        • Tanya Wersinger

Then you can keep your secularity without a moral compass, which is God’s commandments and the Word made Flesh and the teaching authority of the Catholic Church. Drag others who are like minded with you and you will be culpable for their destruction as well. That’s quite a responsibility and a gloomy prospect for the after life. Everyone needs to offer a prayer for you, your opinions and loving tolerance are the problem.

          • Timothy Horton

Then you can keep your secularity without a moral compass,

The only moral compass I need is the Golden Rule, treating my fellow humans with equality, dignity, and respect. You should try it sometime instead of blindly following the “rules” you get from a 2000 year old book.

          • Gary

You can’t use the Golden Rule because it comes from God, and you don’t believe in God. If you claim it doesn’t come from God, then it is just someone’s opinion and nonbinding.

          • Timothy Horton

Prove the Golden Rule comes from your specific God, or any God for that matter.

          • Gary

If it isn’t from God, then it is just some human’s opinion. Which means it has no authority and can be safely ignored.

          • Hannah

It’s not our job to research your claims. Either provide the evidence yourself like a proper scientist with validated sources or expect to be thought of as naught but a parrot who vomits whatever is shoved down its throat.

          • Tanya Wersinger

Okay, you know that the golden rule is directly from the Lord Jesus right?
            Matthew 7:12.

          • Timothy Horton

Okay, you know the Golden Rule was mentioned in the writings of Confucius in the 6th century BC around 700 years before Matthew was written, right? And that the early culture of Greece, Persia, and India also had their own versions, right? And that it’s included in every major religion in the world, right?

          • Tanya Wersinger

Your continued defense is still using religion whether you like that or not. Other religions certainly do have elements of truth, but the Catholic faith is where you will find truth in its fullness. You cannot exclude religion from your way of treating people. But is a false sense of compassion when you don’t tell people who are immoral, or unchaste, or lustful or whatever, that the behaviour is wrong. You let them go on in whatever destructive behaviour without trying to help them find the truth of why they are here and their purpose. Giving into every sort of desire is not a healthy thing, religious or not. Not telling people to live up to their dignity as a human being is not loving them, it is quite the opposite. A true friend will tell you you are falling into a pit, a false one will flatter and say anything just to be liked or tolerant. Tolerance is not generous and not loving.

          • Timothy Horton

Your continued defense is still using religion whether you like that or not.

The Confucius writing that your Bible authors swiped the idea from wasn’t religious. The fact is the Golden Rule has been “discovered” by virtually all human civilizations because it’s just an extension of the evolved altruism found in our species. It doesn’t come from your God or any other God.

A true friend will tell you you are falling into a pit, a false one will flatter and say anything just to be liked or tolerant.

And a religious fanatic will tell you you are falling into a pit and offer to “save” you even when you’re walking safely on flat ground nowhere near any danger.

          • Tanya Wersinger

Timothy Horton, whether you believe in paganism, pantheism, humanism Darwinism, any ism you like, it is a religion, not a true one, but nevertheless a religion. Being a true friend, means telling your friend he(or she), that they need help. It is not only a right thing to do it is a just thing to do. Letting friends, or even someone who is deemed an enemy to carry on in a destructive way and not saying anything is a form of hatred, because you become indifferent, perhaps even self-centered because of a lack of what is happening around you doesn’t stir compassion for others. The golden rule teaches( I know, you know already), to treat those as you would like to be treated. That being the case, then if I am walking around with a tag hanging out of my shirt, I appreciate someone pointing it out so as to fix the offending ticket. Along the same vein, I appreciate someone who cares enough for my wellbeing, that if I were sleeping around and the possibility of catching a dreaded disease is just waiting to happen, it could be that the one who is warning me loves me as himself and wants to be helpful. I disagree with you on your position, of live and let live, because it really isn’t the golden rule which you are upholding, it is on the other hand a comfortable lack of compassion, seeming to love, but love is active, not passive. I know you don’t give a rat about Easter, but I would like to send you Happy Easter greetings. I hope you have a blessed day. Tanya

          • Timothy Horton

Being a true friend, means telling your friend he(or she), that they need help.

But you’re not a true friend. You’re someone “witnessing” and offering to “help” people who neither want not need your meddling “help” in their affairs. You don’t care about non-hetero people even one bit. If you did you’d practice understanding and acceptance. All you want to do is make yourself feel superior by spitting on them, claiming they’re second-class citizens and treating them like children who need your “divine” guidance.

Few things are more obnoxious that a God-botherer trying to push their brand of “help” down everyone else’s throats.

          • Tanya Wersinger

“You don’t care about non-hetero people even one bit. If you did you’d practice understanding and acceptance. All you want to do is make yourself feel superior by spitting on them, claiming they’re second-class citizens and treating them like children who need your “divine” guidance.” You don’t know me. I have worked with many homosexuals in my old career, and I was respectful to them. So who is the superior one here? You seem to know my interior soul and motives. I never said that homosexuals were second class citizens. The homosexuals that I have know had always have had deep emotional problems rooted from a dysfunctional upbringing. They need to be loved, yes, and they need above all to have some serious healing , mental and emotional. You can think what you wish about me, but I assure you I hate no one and only have a good will towards everyone, you are included. Your lack of care for your fellow humans gives you the boldness to be so stiffnecked about anyone who says anything contrary to what you believe . hence your false compassion, you would let every person who is heading towards a precipice fall without warning, because you “understand” and have “compassion”. I have never spat on anyone either, that is repulsive . I will repeat myself, love is active, not passive. You may not like any Christian, and that’s okay, but being hateful is wrong whether you believe in God or not. Finally, you comment on a topic about an Cardinal who is welcoming activists contrary to Catholic beliefs to the Cathedral. If you are an apostate, you have no authority in the matter, if you are an agnostic, ditto, or pagan, or an atheist. I understand you wish to change the Catholic teaching on sexual morals, but you have not been given that power. The Church is not some democracy in which you can change the laws and teachings.
Outsiders have even less to say about the Church, because they are outside. If you hate the Church, then leave it alone and go and do damage elsewhere, which i hope you won’t. I hope you find the truth in your lifetime. having free speech and free will you can do as you wish at the end of the day, but be careful of your sentiments, they could very well leave you alienated. May you be blessed, Tanya
PS the golden rules goes way back before the time of Confucius, Leviticus 19:17-18, given to Moses . peace

The Traditions come from Jesus Christ himself. Spoken words not just a book. HELL IS FOREVER.

          • salesgirl

If you believe in the golden rule, and treating people with dignity and respect, then riddle me this: look at what same sex attracted people DO to each other, and explain how that is treating someone with dignity and respect. These people are not a harmless minority. The need help. There is good reason God told us what they do is wrong, and no, He did not “make them that way,” any more than He made smokers, drinkers, drug addicts, swearers, overeaters “that way.” God bless you

        • Gary

Any reason is the same as no reason to you. One idea is no better or worse than any other in your worldview. There are no values, or morals, or standards of proper behavior in your worldview. And you don’t understand your own beliefs.

          • Timothy Horton

Does it make you happy spurting out these asinine strawmen all the time?

    • mothermary112009

JESUS CHRIST SAID TO REPENT AND SIN NO MORE. YOU CAN BE AN ACTIVELY GAY AND RECEIVE HOLY COMMUNION. YOU ARE IN HELL FOR MORTAL SIN.

  • Mary-Anne Delaney

We need to pray hard for this Bishop.

  • Tanya Wersinger

So the smoke continues to pour into our Church. Pope Emeritus Benedict said we would end up with a smaller Church, but faithful. So the events keep pressing forward to that prophetic insight.

    • Nicholas

Freemasons, communists, homosexuals, and other assorted modernists have totally infiltrated and destroyed most of the Catholic Church. It’s sad when we have to look to modernists like Benedict XVI or JPII as “bastions of orthodoxy,” which they are definitely not.

  • Laramie Stewart

Why do celebrity bloggers always have to inject their folksy observations into everything. It’s the moral collapse of the Catholics Church, not A Prairie Home Companion. Ffs!

    • Nicholas

Also, this article includes an immodest picture with the Bad Teacher movie cover.

  • Nicholas

“All Are Welcome” – the doctrine of Satan. To modern ears, it implies that you can be and do whatever you want without any consequences. Call me old fashioned, but I thought the Catholic Church is supposed to properly form our consciences. When Cardinal Tobin met with these so-called activists, did he explain to them why homosexual acts are sinful and that they must repent and amend their lives? I highly doubt it.

  • im4truth4all

“Who is going to save our Church? Not our Bishops, not our priests and religious. It is up to the people. You have the minds, the eyes, the ears to save the Church. Your mission is to see that your priests act like priests, your bishops like bishops and your religious act like religious” – Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen

“Tolerance is the virtue of man without convictions.” – G.K. Chesterton

“Whoever does not hate error, does not love the truth”.  – G.K. Chesterton

  • Ed of Ct.

Boycott his Tobin and Hfd ab Blair annual Appeal for bishop fund. I did this in Sept. 2014 joining a faithful Maronite Catholic church .. . . I then wrote to Ab Mansel in Htfd then and Catholic transcript diocese paper telling them to Remove my name from mailing and money solicitor list Forever. I explained why due to various Homosexual and liberal actions by CT. Alleged Catholic churches there… ….. I must Not be the only one in CT. To do this. According to secular media there has been SEVENTY percent decline in weekly Mass going on a weekly basis since then… . . Diocese of Bpt. Latin novus ordo rite is thirty million dollars in debt in Fairfield cty. alone. Sadly this is the only language liberals like Tobin,Dolan, Cupich ,McElroy and Gomez understand .

  • Rene

The wrecking of the Catholic Church continues at a fast pace under Pope Francis. May God have mercy on us!

    • Gary

Can’t you do anything about it?

      • Rene

The best thing I can do is pray for the Church and the pope. Moreover, if someone asks me what I think about Pope Francis, I can charitably say what I think.

  • Tom Harris

Francis appointed this QUACK a cardinal, is the church out of its mind? Will now he invite a brothel and all the harlots to come to Mass and receive communion? UNBELIEVABLE. Francis is truly destroying the Catholic Church, he’s a heretic. Jesus would not allow this stuff at his last supper.

    • Nicholas

Exactly right. Francis also just appointed “Fr.” James Martin, S.J. (Society of Judas) as Consultant for Vatican Secretariat for Communications. Mr. Martin is infamous for his gay activism.

    • Gary

Why do Catholics tolerate this? Do you have no power to stop it?

      • salesgirl

Why do you ask? have you had any luck changing the government?

  • joisygoil

First it was Obama trying to destroy and bring down the country and now the Pope does the same thing with the church. Luckily, Jesus said, ” The gates of hell shall not prevail against My Church!” Of course, keep in mind that evil will do its level best to take as many casualties as possible in this war of good against evil. .

  • jusoh

Is this Cardinal a Wolf in Sheep’s clothing ?. He is welcoming what God has punish in the time of Lot. By the way he should be investigated if he himself is a gay infiltrator of the Church, the Smoke of Satan mentioned by Pope Paul iV.

  • jusoh

Pray a Rosary for the Wolfs in Sheeps clothings to be discovered and removed from the Church.

    • Gary

Why don’t you, and others like you, march down to where they are and demand their removal?

  • Warren

He works for a New World Order Appointed Pope. A lot easier to own a Pope than be one !

  • Jonnie Lovinger

What is our world coming too, The should make a place for the GLBT community, I admit, but not at the cost to what we believe. To become a member of the Christian community requires a personal change, and on that point we must make a stand or Christianity as we know it will be overrun and eventually be destroyed and that is the goal of the “GLBT” activitists,, in their manual, a real faith in Jesus, must be destroyed..we stand in the way of their total domination of society..be warned.

    • salesgirl

Amen the Catholic Church DOES have a place for those who are plagued by same sex attractions. It is called Courage and yes it calls on sinners to repent just like any other Catholic outreach. You are correct however: all too often it ends up with the bishops supporting not Courage but “faith sharing” groups who tell sinners to come as they are, go with the flow etc.
