“I think what we see going on in our society today is an America without her founding Father. Our job as Christians is to remind America who the real founding Father is,” Jimmy Womble told The Stream in an interview. Womble is co-writer and co-director of the new film Running the Bases.

Running the Bases tells the story of a small-town baseball coach who uproots his family for a coaching job at a bigger school, where his faith gets challenged and tested. He sticks to his beliefs, even when he is ridiculed and mocked and almost loses his job for doing so. The story is one of heartbreak, healing and standing up for one’s faith.

Yes, it’s a sports movie, and with spring training just getting underway, a little taste of baseball goes a long way. But Womble says the goal of the film is much bigger: To try to wake up the complacent Christian.

He and co-writer and co-director Marty Roberts knew the message they wanted to send before they began writing. “And the message is that our society is crumbling because of the absence of God’s people and our complacency in our walk with God, [which] can lend itself to us to pull away from society. And so our message is to really encourage Christians to get out and live what they say they believe out loud and create Kingdom culture in today’s society where we’ve seen a pretty big absence of it.”

People who live their faith out loud will experience persecution, as Jesus said. “He told us that the world hated Him. I mean, they crucified Him.” Womble added that Jesus experienced more persecution than anyone ever would. “But it didn’t deter Him. He stayed about the Father’s business.

“And I think that’s the message to every Christian from this film is, you’re going to be talked about, you’re going to experience persecution, but we should not live in fear of that persecution. We should be more willing to take a stand in those convictions that we believe, and we should not be afraid to live our faith out loud. Whatever comes our way.”

Running the Bases is streaming on all the major platforms and on Spectrum. It is also available for purchase from major retailers.
