The Myth Called ‘Race’

To sub-divide humanity based upon outward appearance is to rely upon the weakest of genetic markers.

By Matt Barber Published on September 24, 2016

It’s often said, “There is only one race — the human race.” While the phrase has become almost cliché in repetition, it happens to be 100 percent accurate, both scientifically and theologically speaking.

From Ferguson to Baltimore, Tulsa to Charlotte — and on college campuses from coast-to-coast — a great divide is sweeping America. It is fueled largely, if not entirely, by half-truths and outright lies. Truth is irrelevant. Only the narrative matters. When “Hands Up Don’t Shoot™” can do so very much to further “the cause,” it matters not that it represents a holocaust-denial-level of detachment from reality.

Which tells you everything you need to know about the cause.

This is by design. These embers of racial division are purposely fanned to a red-hot flame by certain political leaders, “social justice” warriors and “community organizers” (cut principally from the same ideological cloth) in order to permanently ingrain a turbulent level of cultural division based solely upon the varying shades of people’s skin. This, in turn, is intended to provoke widespread governmental dependency and, thus, one-party political control in perpetuity.

Yet, even at its core the idea of racial division, of separate “races,” is a myth. To sub-divide humanity based upon varying levels of skin pigmentation and subtle physical features is to rely upon the weakest of genetic markers.

Science Dispels the Myth of ‘Race’

In a Feb. 5 Scientific American article titled, “Race is a Social Construct, Scientists Argue,” journalist Megan Gannon writes, “Today, the mainstream belief among scientists is that race is a social construct without biological meaning. And yet, you might still open a study on genetics in a major scientific journal and find categories like ‘white’ and ‘black’ being used as biological variables.”

“In an article published today (Feb. 4) in the journal Science,” continues Gannon, “four scholars say racial categories are weak proxies for genetic diversity and need to be phased out.”

“It’s a concept we think is too crude to provide useful information, it’s a concept that has social meaning that interferes in the scientific understanding of human genetic diversity, and it’s a concept that we are not the first to call upon moving away from,” notes Michael Yudell, professor of public health at Drexel University in Philadelphia. Under the latest genetic research, race is “understood to be a poorly defined marker of that diversity and an imprecise proxy for the relationship between ancestry and genetics,” he adds.

While not directly involved with the research, Dr. Svante Pääbo, a biologist and director of the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Germany, agrees wholeheartedly with its findings. “What the study of complete genomes from different parts of the world has shown is that even between Africa and Europe, for example, there is not a single absolute genetic difference, meaning no single variant where all Africans have one variant and all Europeans another one, even when recent migration is disregarded.”

Still, as the researchers likewise note, “Assumptions about genetic differences between people of different races have had obvious social and historical repercussions.” Indeed, there are those on both extremes of the political spectrum with a vested interest in making sure these social and historical repercussions remain as inflamed and catastrophic as possible.

“Race” is a divisive means to a selfish political end.

It is not a scientific reality.

God’s Final Word on ‘Race’

We love labels. We love to pit people against one another and lump them into neat, fixed little categories of put-upons, most often based upon outward appearances: black vs. white; Hispanic vs. Asian; tall vs. short; skinny vs. fat; old vs. young; abled vs. disabled, and so on.

But every human being is created by a holy God, in His image and likeness, and imbued by Him with infinite worth and import. There is only one true and transcendent physical division, and that division was both created and intended by God to become reconciled (as one flesh) through the holy bonds of marriage — this, to propagate the human race: “So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them” (Genesis 1:27).

Male and female. The XY and the XX. Immutable distinctions with a beautiful and bountiful difference, but still within the same human race. Ethnic distinctions are far less significant.

“I appeal to you, brothers, to watch out for those who cause divisions and create obstacles contrary to the doctrine that you have been taught; avoid them” (Romans 16:17).

To be sure, Christ Jesus alone can dissolve these divisions. “For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, bestowing his riches on all who call on him” (Romans 10:12).

These are not financial riches, but riches of love, life Spirit and salvation.

As a man with an Italian wife, a black sister-in-law, a Filipino uncle and biologically related half Filipino cousins, a step-grandmother who illegally immigrated from Mexico, biologically related half Mexican aunts and uncles, and dozens of foster brothers and sisters from across the globe, I have learned firsthand throughout my life that “race” is less than skin deep.

Until we learn this as a nation, we will remain a nation divided.

Yes, love is the answer. “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another” (John 13:34).

There is no political fix to this problem.

It’s a spiritual problem, requiring a spiritual fix.

And His name is Jesus.

Thank you for this! I am so sick and tired of hearing about race, especially when much of what’s being said and done these days is all based on lies!

Amen! Truly great stuff, my brother!

Hasn’t anyone in our Godless American pop-culture (other than perhaps Mr. Barber) had the opportunity to encounter the 21st-century’s scientifically valid, descriptive phrase in molecular anthropology, called “Y Chromosal Adam & Mitochondrial Eve”?? After all, the Judeo-Christian Scriptures hinted at, or said it first…albeit in non-technical terms! (See the profoundly compelling [2015], Second Expanded Edition, of “Who Was Adam? A Creation Model Approach to the Origin of Humanity,” by astrophysicist Dr. Hugh Ross & biochemist Dr. Fazale Rana…of “Reasons to Believe.”)

Additionally, one can also find confirmation for these now scientifically valid “inferences to the best explanation,” [or IBE, in the historical sciences], through the biblical quotation at bottom, by the [Jewish] rabbinical scholar, Sha’ul of Tarsus, or “Apostle Paul,” the Apostle to the Gentiles/goyim, during his sermon some 2,000 years ago to the Epicurean & Stoic philosophers on Mars Hill, in Athens.)

It is SO very nice to see solid, cutting-edge scientific facts that’ve been revealed during the last couple of decades in molecular biology & biochemistry – aka the disciplines of epigenetics, proteomics, molecular genetics and/or molecular anthropology – on an otherwise Christian blog; whose participants are typically & pejoratively portrayed in Western media-circles, as people of whom usually represent “nothing more than flat-earth believing, bible-thumping, intellectual simpletons.”

Please notice that these profoundly biblical-worldview-affirming, “scientific” conclusions re: Adam & Eve [Hebrew = “mother of ALL living”] have nonetheless, been very carefully, or perhaps insidiously kept from general consumption throughout the West, by those ideologically motivated “intellectual gate-keepers controlling the cultural microphone.”

And rather tragically, these fideistic devotees to Charles Darwin’s Godless, and now-FALSIFIED “Designer Substitute” called “MACROevolutionary philosophy” – or the “molecule to man conundrum,” unique to the equally incoherent concept of “evolutionary naturalism” – have all along, seemingly plotted systematically [can you say teleologically?] to have multiplied millions of unsuspecting people believe that H+#o sapiens’ so-called “emergence” on planet earth, was simply a fortuitous “accident” of mindless [or UNintelligent], UNguided, purposesless materialistic processes – thus “Human UNexceptionalism”; as opposed to the unambiguous biblical revelation that we rational/moral human beings were purposefully, or teleologically “created in the image of God” – i.e., the Creator’s apex of creation on “Day [Hebrew = “Yom”] Six” – thus the scientifically credible implication of “H+#o sapiens’ Exceptionalism”!

People, please consider that there is indeed a Creator God of the Judeo-Christian variety – and we’re NOT Him! And this invisible God, “who is Spirit” (John 4:22) – of whom has unmistakably revealed Himself physically to mankind, through the historical person of Yeshua/Jesus of Nazareth – has been described during the 20th & 21st-centuries as the personal, transcendent, self-existent, thus “UNcreated First Cause” of this “contingently-existing” universe, and everything within it – including we rational/moral “conscious observers” called H$#o sapiens.

This is why some of the most brilliant thinkers on this planet – even unbelieving and/or agnostic scientists, philosophers of science et al. – have had to concede, grudgingly or otherwise, that according to modern science’s “Standard Model of Physics,” the current description we have of nature is “theistic friendly,” or fully consistent with the biblical worldview of “creation ex-nihilo” – i.e., creation from/out of NOthing!

After all, the worldview of the Judeo-Christian Scriptures provides the ONLY rational/logical answer to the still-compelling-and-valid, centuries-old Leibnizian conundrum, aka “Why Is There Something Rather Than Nothing”?

    * * *

22 “So Paul stood in the midst of the Areopagus and said, “Men of Athens, I observe that you are very religious in all respects. 23 For while I was passing through and examining the objects of your worship, I also found an altar with this inscription, ‘TO AN UNKNOWN GOD.’ Therefore what you worship in ignorance, this I proclaim to you. 24 The God who made the world and all things in it, since He is Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in temples made with hands; 25 nor is He served by human hands, as though He needed anything, since He Himself gives to all people life and breath and all things; 26 AND HE [God] MADE FROM ONE MAN [or “blood” – NKJV/KJV] EVERY NATION OF MANKIND TO LIVE ON ALL THE FACE OF THE EARTH, HAVING DETERMINED THEIR APPOINTED TIMES AND THE BOUNDARIES OF THEIR HABITATION, THAT THEY WOULD SEEK GOD, if perhaps they might grope for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us; 28 for in Him we live and move and exist, as even some of your own poets have said, ‘For we also are His children.’ 29 Being then the children of God, we ought not to think that the Divine Nature is like gold or silver or stone, an image formed by the art and thought of man. 30 Therefore having overlooked the times of ignorance, God is now declaring to men that all people everywhere should repent, 31 because He has fixed a day in which He will judge the world in righteousness through a Man whom He has appointed, HAVING FURNISHED PROOF TO ALL MEN [humanity] BY RAISING HIM FROM THE DEAD.”

My emphasis, of course. (Acts 17:22-31/NASB)

Concerning race, long ago my 9th grade social studies teacher taught us that humans are all shades of brown (even “white” and “black” people are not truly white or black). So relate to all people as individuals, not part of a “race”.
