Media Mocks, Abstinence Advocates Praise Tebow — Even as His Girlfriend Dumps Him

Tebow single again, thanks to abstinence vow.

College and NFL football star Tim Tebow is single again — apparently because he wouldn’t have sex with a former Miss USA.

New York Daily News (NYDN) reports that Olivia Culpo has allegedly broken up with the famously-abstinent Tebow. According to an anonymous source cited by the NYDN, Tebow “was really into her,” and “was sending her love letters and cute notes and professing his love for her.”

However, “She had to break up with him because she just couldn’t handle it. He still hits her up, but she just can’t deal with the sex thing. He’s pretty adamant about it, I guess.”

While media outlets mocked Tebow — NYDN wrote that “for once, it’s not Tim Tebow who’s having trouble scoring — it’s his girlfriend,” and Tampa Bay’s CBS affiliate opened its article by saying, “Apparently an NFL job isn’t the only thing Tim Tebow can’t hold onto” — abstinence advocates praised Tebow for his dedication to abstinence.

“Tim Tebow’s commitment to abstinence before marriage is both commendable and an example. Unlike many public figures, Tebow has promoted the beauty of sex by withholding it in his relationship with Olivia Culpo until he is married,” said Natural Family Planning and Theology of the Body speaker Cynthia Buttjer.

Buttjer, a student at the International Theological Institute who has addressed couples in pre-Cana courses, told The Stream that “sexual desire is a gift from God to man, but giving and receiving will leave us unsatisfied outside a stable relationship in which both partners are faithful and fully committed to each other. Once committed, couples will find that sexual desire leads them not only to each other but also to the God who created them with desire — a God who is Himself love.”

“Tebow’s example should inspire America’s youth to realize that sex is more than a physical action — it is the fulfillment of love and sacrifice only found in marriage.”

Valerie Huber, President and CEO of the pro-abstinence group Ascend, likewise praised Tebow “for treating women with respect and wanting to build a relationship on something lasting.  Tebow provides a positive and refreshing alternative to the all-too-common occurrences of sexual assault, victimization and objectification of women.”

“Whether he knows it or not, the model he is following for his dating relationships is also consistent with what the social science research tells us is most likely to benefit his future marriage relationship,” she told The Stream.

Huber described Tebow as “the sort of role model that young men should emulate as a first-class individual both on and off the field.”
